Rex Cinema Elland

Rex Cinema Elland Cinema The Rex, Elland is one of the oldest purpose built, structurally unaltered cinemas in the country. The manager and pianist was Harry Taylor.
(1570)

It was built in 1912 and opened as the Picture House on 12 December that year. It was operated by Central Pictures (Elland) Ltd which was formed of local businessmen. Within a few years the company had taken over the Town Hall (later the Palladium) cinema in town, which had been showing films since 1909. The two cinemas were managed by James Montgomery. The Central closed in January 1959 due to co

mpetition from television and the frequent bus service to cinemas in nearby Halifax and Huddersfield. The Palladium followed suit in June the same year. Walker Cinemas of Huddersfield then acquired the Central, carried out a refurbishment (including the installation of Cinemascope) and re-opened it as the Rex in November 1959. Bingo intruded on a couple of evenings in 1964 and took over completely later in the year. Proprietorship changed a couple of times and a further trial of films occurred between November 1975 and August 1977, after which bingo resumed. The enterprise folded sometime in 1985. In 1988 the Rex was taken over by Charles Morris and Peter Berry, extensively refurbished and opened on 7 October. It has since built up a reputation of a well run, comfortable but traditional cinema showing a wide range of films. It has a mailing list with addresses as far apart as Leeds and Manchester and attracts a large, regular and loyal following, with ticket prices among the lowest in the country.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 continues into next week. The cast from the original film are all here - Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt - but the fashion world is now very different. A number of other famous names also appear in cameo roles - Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, Lady Gaga, Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell and Donatella Versace among them. Peter Bradshaw, not noted for his enthusiasm, is neverthless quite upbeat about this film and describes it as "good natured, buoyant entertainment." Showing today and tomorrow at 7.45 (plus 10.30am tomorrow), Friday, Saturday and Tuesday at 8.00, Sunday at 6.00 (ends 8.20; nice and early for work the next day !), Wednesday at 2.30 and Thursday 14th at 7.45.

THE SHEEP DETECTIVES (pg) is also showing from Friday. Very much along the lines of BABE (from 1995, can you believe it), this is an animal adventure / comedy in which a shepherd reads murder mysteries to his sheep every night, pretending they can understand. When he is found dead, the sheep realizes at once that it was a murder and think they know how to solve it. Showing on Friday, Monday and Tuesday at 5.20 (film itself 5.40), Saturday2.30 & 5.20, Sunday 2.30, Wednesday 7.45 (we know adults will like it) and Thursday morning, 14th, at 10.30am.
