Rex Cinema Elland

Cinema The Rex, Elland is one of the oldest purpose built, structurally unaltered cinemas in the country. The manager and pianist was Harry Taylor.

It was built in 1912 and opened as the Picture House on 12 December that year. It was operated by Central Pictures (Elland) Ltd which was formed of local businessmen. Within a few years the company had taken over the Town Hall (later the Palladium) cinema in town, which had been showing films since 1909. The two cinemas were managed by James Montgomery. The Central closed in January 1959 due to competition from television and the frequent bus service to cinemas in nearby Halifax and Huddersfield. The Palladium followed suit in June the same year. Walker Cinemas of Huddersfield then acquired the Central, carried out a refurbishment (including the installation of Cinemascope) and re-opened it as the Rex in November 1959. Bingo intruded on a couple of evenings in 1964 and took over completely later in the year. Proprietorship changed a couple of times and a further trial of films occurred between November 1975 and August 1977, after which bingo resumed. The enterprise folded sometime in 1985. In 1988 the Rex was taken over by Charles Morris and Peter Berry, extensively refurbished and opened on 7 October. It has since built up a reputation of a well run, comfortable but traditional cinema showing a wide range of films. It has a mailing list with addresses as far apart as Leeds and Manchester and attracts a large, regular and loyal following, with ticket prices among the lowest in the country.

BAD APPLES, starring Saoirse Ronan, has a struggling primary school teacher begin to make some questionable decisions after one of her students is injured. It is being screened on Saturday and Sunday at 5.00

PRESSURE returns for another screening on Sunday at 2.30. British meteorologist James Stagg is up against Dwight D. Eisenhower in trying to agree a suitable date to launch the D Day landings.

VERITY (15) starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, shows tonight and Wednesday at 7.45 plus Thursday morning at 10.30am. A psychological thriller in which Lowen Ashleigh, hired to ghostwrite for best-selling author Verity Crawford, uncovers Verity's autobiographical notes, and becomes involved in what may prove to be a lethal conspiracy. Based on the novel by Colleen Hoover.

HEART OF THE BEAST (12a) is another film we are showing this weekend. Brad Pitt stars as Special Forces veteran James Belmont. After a harrowing plane crash, he and his combat dog Odin, a German Shepherd, find themselves stranded deep in the Alaskan wilderness. Together they are forced into a brutal fight for survival against the elements. A tough watch in some respects, but a must for dog lovers, especially those who like German Shepherds. And it was on this very day, thirty eight years ago, when we reopened the Rex. The first film was Big Business, starring Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin. It was a hard struggle for more than a year until we showed Shirley Valentine, with Pauline Collins, which resulted in packed houses every time we showed it. And thirty eight years later we are still here. Thank you Shirley !

DE GAULLE: RESISTANCE, the first of a two-part epic biographical drama, continues the WW2 theme by following the general as a leading figure in the French Resistance during the war. This shows on Thursday 1st `at 7.15 (note the earlier time). The second part is on Thursday 15th.
