Rex Cinema Elland Cinema The Rex, Elland is one of the oldest purpose built, structurally unaltered cinemas in the country. The manager and pianist was Harry Taylor.

It was built in 1912 and opened as the Picture House on 12 December that year. It was operated by Central Pictures (Elland) Ltd which was formed of local businessmen. Within a few years the company had taken over the Town Hall (later the Palladium) cinema in town, which had been showing films since 1909. The two cinemas were managed by James Montgomery. The Central closed in January 1959 due to co

mpetition from television and the frequent bus service to cinemas in nearby Halifax and Huddersfield. The Palladium followed suit in June the same year. Walker Cinemas of Huddersfield then acquired the Central, carried out a refurbishment (including the installation of Cinemascope) and re-opened it as the Rex in November 1959. Bingo intruded on a couple of evenings in 1964 and took over completely later in the year. Proprietorship changed a couple of times and a further trial of films occurred between November 1975 and August 1977, after which bingo resumed. The enterprise folded sometime in 1985. In 1988 the Rex was taken over by Charles Morris and Peter Berry, extensively refurbished and opened on 7 October. It has since built up a reputation of a well run, comfortable but traditional cinema showing a wide range of films. It has a mailing list with addresses as far apart as Leeds and Manchester and attracts a large, regular and loyal following, with ticket prices among the lowest in the country.

We recommend parking on Timber Street which is just a short walk through Elland and the most convenient option while the roadworks are in place.

THE ODYSSEY (15) Christopher Nolan's much anticipated latest extravaganza hits our screen tonight. It shows daily at 7.00 (including Sunday) at 7.00 plus Saturday and Sunday at 3.15 and Thursday morning at 10.30am. Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway head the cast which also includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. It's getting positive reviews everywhere (5 stars from Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian, which must be something of a record) and the Radio Times this week is full of it. Definitely not to be missed and certainly one for the big screen.

MINIONS AND MONSTERS (u), for the children (young and old !) and families is on Saturday and Sunday at 1.00 and Monday to Thursday at 2.30.

THE CHRISTOPHERS shows tonight AND TOMORROW, THURS at 7.45 (apologies for the fact that tomorrow's show was missing from the website !). A black comedy directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel, it tells the tale of an eccentric artist whose unscrupulous children hire a young artist to complete his unfinished paintings so they can sell them for a fortune when he has died. It's one of these good films which unfortunately don't receive the publicity they deserve and so risk passing by unnoticed. Everyone who's seen it so far has enjoyed it.

OBSESSION Thurs morning, 9th, at 10.30am. A psychological thriller and not typical Rex fare, but we try to cater for all tastes. It has done good business elsewhere.

THE INVITE Another good film which the distributors haven't been able to afford publicising so it relies on word of mouth. Starring Seth Rogan, Olivia Wilde, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton, this comedy romance begins with Joe and Angela's marriage which is on thin ice. When they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbours for a dinner party the night spirals into unexpected places. Showing from Friday 10th to Thursday 16th at 7.45 - except Saturday when it's at 7.20, giving people time to get home for the football. Also on Thursday 16th at 10.30am.
