And Next up from CineChard we have “Hamnet” – likely to be one of the most popular films of the year.
In late 16th-century England, Agnes, a healer sensitive to the world around her, builds a home with William, a local tutor and aspiring playwright. As their lives fracture, they are tested by distance, silence, and grief.
Produced by (among others) Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes, directed by Chloé Zhao, and written by Maggie O’Farrell and Chloé Zhao, “Hamnet” delivers breathtaking cinematography and profoundly emotional storytelling that explores grief with devastating power. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal deliver career-best performances in this heartbreaking drama that will leave audiences in tears.

Friday 12th June, usual time, usual place £6 in advance, £7 on the door.

Only one more sleep until this epic adventure is screened at The Guildhall. Some of you who have already purchased tickets might have noticed the ticket states 18th May instead of 8th May. Sorry for the misprint your ticket is valid for this Friday.

Less than a week to go until our first standout film of the summer “One Battle After Another”. Usual time, usual place, but don’t forget it’s a bit longer than our most of our shows.

Sgilman-42371 has given it 10/10 and reviewed it on IMDB thus:

“Fantastic – a great film and very original.
One Battle After Another" is an absolutely captivating film that exceeded every expectation. From the opening scene, it pulls you straight into its world with powerful storytelling, beautifully layered characters, and a pace that never lets go.

The performances are exceptional - raw, believable, and deeply moving. Every character feels fully realised, and their struggles resonate long after the credits roll. The direction is sharp, the cinematography is stunning, and the soundtrack enhances every emotional beat without ever overpowering it.

What impressed me most is how the film balances action, heart, and real human depth. It's not just about conflict - it's about resilience, courage, and the quiet battles people fight within themselves.

A standout film and easily one of the most memorable I've seen in a long time. Highly recommended.”

It’s the first film of our new season coming up on Friday 8th May – and it’s an epic blockbuster!
Epic because it weighs in at 161 minutes, and a blockbuster because it won 6 Oscars including best picture.
It features a cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro and is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Washed-up revolutionary Bob exists in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited, self-reliant daughter, Willa. When his evil nemesis resurfaces after 16 years and she goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her, father and daughter both battling the consequences of his past.
Be aware that this film is rated 15, and contains violence, strong language, s*x references, s*xual violence and drug use

The other films we’ll be showing over the next few months include Hamnet, Song Sung Blue and H is for Hawk – all before we celebrate our tenth anniversary in September with a mystery film chosen by the CineChard Committee. Will you trust us to entertain you?

Great Film last night - and a swift AGM following it. We have a new Chair - Sam - and this was my retiring Chair's report, although I'll still be involved with the team ...
It’s been a great year; we’ve shown 13 films, and entertained 708 people – an average of over 54 per film – at three different venues; at our regular haunt of the Guildhall, at the CommuniTEA Waffle House and at Chard Museum and we are looking a the possibility of visiting other venues during 2026. Some of us are still keen on putting on the Star Wars trilogy back-to-back in one night, but this might prove both tricky to achieve and quite expensive – and it would irritate Cath.
CineChard wouldn’t work without an audience, and it wouldn’t work without the team of volunteers including Cath who has been with it since the very beginning, Judith, Sam, Harry and Chris, Kate, John and Denise, Jeremy – and not forgetting Bev and Terry who tirelessly slave away in the Kitchen, and Richard who lends us bits and pieces for outside broadcasts and always steps in to help if we are a bit short staffed. The other key players without whom we would be in dire straights are of course Gary and Mel who get the venue ready for us, and sort out technical issues. Talking of technical issues, we’ve just taken a tentative step into the post-covid world and acquired sum-up machine, so you’ll be able to buy tickets on the door with your phone or a card.
I’ve been chair for 5 years or so, projectionist a bit longer, and doing the artwork for about the same length of time. The ship is in good shape, and it’s time to hand over to Sam.
We showed Conclave in March 2025, and attracted 130 people – the best audience we’ve had during my tenure. Let’s see if we can find a film to rival its popularity during 2026.
My favourite film of the year? The Ballad of Wallis Island.

Only two days until we present “The Choral” on April 10th at the Guildhall. Doors 7pm, 7:30 kick-off.

Written by Alan Bennet, directed by Nicholas Hytner and with a brilliant cast this should be a great evening out.
A choral society's male members enlist in World War I, leaving the demanding Dr. Guthrie to recruit teenagers. Together, they experience the joy of singing while the young boys grapple with their impending conscription into the army.

Keep a look out for the chauffer to Edward Elgar – it’s a cameo by George Fenton, composer of the film score!

It’s the CineChard AGM after the film, so if you want to find out a bit more about how we work, and maybe help out now and again, please join us after the show for a brief meeting

One of our most anticipated films of the year - it's "Ocean" tonight making a splash at the Guildhall. We've got hold of a pre-release Blu-Ray, so unfortuntely there are no subtitles. Please make sure you bring your herring aids!

We have an excursion to Downton Abbey in a couple of weeks, and what better way to start that Valentine weekend?

Sntvcn rates it 8/10 on IMDB and describes it thus:

“Downton Abbey - The Grand Finale is an elegant and accomplished farewell. The writers wisely chose the path of subtraction: fewer contrived twists, more focus on the truth of the characters. At its heart lie the relationships and the interplay between social groups, capturing the very essence of the series. It works beautifully as a compendium, distilling what Downton Abbey has been for more than a decade.”

As usual, it’s 7 for 7:30 at the Guildhall in Chard. It’s rated PG and it runs for 2 hours and 3 minutes.

Come and watch this great film written by Julian Fellowes, patron of Moviola

And that’s a Wrap for 2025!

The phrase "That's a wrap" originated in the early film industry, likely in the 1920s, to signal the end of a day's or a film's shooting. The term "wrap" is believed to come from the physical act of "wrapping" the film roll onto a spool after it had been exposed in the camera, though a popular backronym ("Wind, Reel, And Print") is widely debated and likely untrue. The phrase was popularized by directors to let the cast and crew know they could stop filming and prepare to move on.
