Happy Sunday!

In the run-up to Arrow Video Presents Grindfest, our weekends continue to be spent preparing 35mm prints for the big weekend, 18-20 September!

The question is, what is this year's surprise film?…👀

Previous surprise films have included Anguish (1987), The Kindred (1987), Lady Terminator (1989), The 4:30 Movie (2024), and It's Alive III: Island of the Alive (1987).

This year's surprise? Let's just say we're very excited about this one, but our lips are sealed!

WE HAD SUCH A GREAT TIME AT THE ARROW VIDEO STORE, TALKING ABOUT OUR FAVOURITE ARROW FILMS WE'VE SCREENED ON 35MM! ❤️

And in case you missed it......One of our Top 5 was THE QUIET EARTH (1985), New Zealand’s first science-fiction feature.

Directed by Geoff Murphy, who later worked in Hollywood on films including Freejack and Under Siege 2.

The film is based on Craig Harrison’s 1982 novel of the same name.

It was shot around Hamilton, New Zealand, using the country’s landscape and deserted locations throughout the film.

The film combines science fiction, mystery, drama and post-apocalyptic elements.

If you haven’t seen it, we won’t say anything more....

To close ARROW VIDEO Presents GRINDFEST 2026, we're incredibly excited to be screening Robin Hardy's legendary THE WICKER MAN (1973) — and doing so from a rare 35mm IB Technicolor print.

There is something particularly fitting about presenting this film on film.

The Wicker Man was a movie that Christopher Lee passionately believed in. He was so determined to see it made that he worked without a fee, and he remained proud of the film throughout his life.

When British Lion released the film in 1973, there were no press screenings and very little publicity. Lee didn't simply walk away. He personally contacted critics and encouraged them to see it, even offering to pay for their cinema seats.

It's remarkable to think that a film which was initially treated almost as an afterthought — released in Britain as the B-feature alongside Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now, after being cut down to 87 minutes — would eventually become recognised as one of the great landmarks of British cinema.

Now, over half a century later, Lord Summerisle returns to the big screen at ARROW VIDEO Presents GRINDFEST, projected from a rare 35mm Technicolor print.

A fitting way to close the festival.

ARROW VIDEO → HELLRAISER

If you caught our video of our time in the Arrow Video store, you'll know that Hellraiser was one of our top five Arrow films we recommended to see with an audience.

So, it seems only right to follow that up with a little throwback to when we actually got to do just that!

We were lucky enough to experience Hellraiser on the big screen with a fantastic audience, followed by a brilliant Q&A with Nicholas Vince. Seeing this Clive Barker classic with a crowd was something really special — the atmosphere, the reactions and hearing Nicholas share his memories of the film made it a night to remember.

Looking back through these photos, it's easy to remember just how much fun the whole evening was. And it's a perfect example of why some films deserve to be experienced on the big screen, surrounded by other film lovers.

"Robert Englund was Freddy. Now he is the Phantom of the Opera! An all new nightmare at its slashing best!"

The 35mm print has been assembled, checked and is ready for projection at Grindfest. There’s something particularly special about seeing Dwight H. Little’s wonderfully deranged take on The Phantom of the Opera the way it was meant to be seen — on film.

Diverging from the romantic grandeur of the stage musical, Little’s 1989 adaptation turns Gaston Leroux’s classic into a visceral, time-shifting gothic slasher.

Robert Englund stars as Erik Destler, a disfigured composer who sells his soul to the devil to make his music immortal — at the terrible price of having to “stitch” his face together with the skin of his victims. When Juilliard student Christine Day (Jill Schoelen) discovers his lost score, a mysterious accident transports her back to 19th-century London, where she becomes the muse and prisoner of the murderous maestro.

With early appearances from Bill Nighy and Molly Shannon, sumptuous Hammer-inspired visuals and gloriously gruesome practical makeup effects from Kevin Yagher, this is The Phantom of the Opera at its most macabre.
