STOP PRESS! We're delighted to announce Dr. Kate Egan from Northumbria University will be introducing our upcoming screening of JAWS THE REVENGE! DITG regulars will know her from previous engagements with us, notably our first ever official event, EVIL DEAD 16mm/35mm double bill and Monty Python's Life Of Brian at The Official Shelley Theatre. She is the author of Trash or Treasure? Censorship and the Changing Meanings of the Video Nasties (MUP, 2007), Cultographies: The Evil Dead (Wallflower, 2011), and (with Martin Barker, Tom Philips and Sarah Ralph) Alien Audiences (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). She is also the co-editor of Cult Film Stardom (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), And Now for Something Completely Different: Critical Approaches to Monty Python (EUP, 2020), and Researching Historical Screen Audiences (EUP, 2022), and co-editor of the Hidden Horror Histories book series (LUP).

She is currently planning and developing further research on horror cinema and performance, and audience memories of horror film and television. This includes a monograph, Remembering Ghostwatch: Horror, Childhood and the Home, and an edited collection, Researching Horror Fans and Audiences in the Twenty-First Century, with James Rendell (University of South Wales). She is also Co-Investigator (alongside Cat Lester, University of Birmingham) of the AHRC-funded Youth and Horror Research Network.

She is a recognised expert on horror cinema, media audiences, and film censorship, and has been interviewed on these topics by BBC Radio Three, BBC Radio Four, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Scotland and ABC News Australia, as well as appearing in the documentary Video Nasties: Draconian Days (Jake West, 2014).

‘The Ultimate Modern Adventure In Wonder-Vision 3-D’

A group of adventurers are gathered to retrieve mystical gems which are in the possession of a deadly cult.

Probably the best example and utilisation of 3D technology of the time!

Here's a list of props thrown into the audience in "Treasure of the Four Crowns" - Knives, spears, darts, bones, jewelled daggers, balls of fire, laser beams, boulders, ropes, attack dogs, bats, shards of stained glass, a set of dishes, a large kettle, a stove, a co**se, a python snake, an empty glove, birds (both real and artificial), arrows, unidentifiable glowing objects shot from guns, keys, letter openers, several human heads, skeletons, large sections of an exploding castle, one bottle of booze and assorted spoons!

EXCITING NEWS! We are delighted to be collaborating this year with Northumbria University’s Horror Studies Research Group who will be introducing selected screenings.

The group’s core team - Professor Stacey Abbott, Dr Kate Egan, Dr Russ Hunter, Dr Steve Jones, Dr Damien Pollard and Dr Johnny Walker – are widely recognised as leaders in horror studies, publishing key horror studies books and delivering talks at numerous European film festivals. Members of the team will be providing informative introductions to future Dirt in the Gate screenings and Kate will also be researching Dirt in the Gate’s audiences.
