✂️ A PASTEL SUBURB MEETS ITS STRANGEST NEIGHBOUR.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS returns to the big screen at Mockingbird Cinema on Saturday 24 October at 12pm, as part of our Tim Burton Season.

A small suburban town gets a visitor. Edward (Johnny Depp) is a castaway science experiment, left behind by his creator, the Inventor, played by Vincent Price.

He is not finished.

Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest), an Avon saleswoman, discovers him and brings him home to her family, where her teenage daughter Kim (Winona Ryder) is not at all sure what to make of the new arrival, and the whole street soon has an opinion of its own.

Burton directs from a script by Caroline Thompson, who wrote the story with him, and Fox fast-tracked the film in 1990 after the success of BATMAN. Danny Elfman's score, his fourth with Burton, earned a Grammy nomination, and Anthony Michael Hall and Kathy Baker are among the neighbours.

Peg sells make-up door to door, so she was always going to be the first one to say hello.

🎞️ A CURSED FILM SHOOT STARTS TO SWALLOW ITS STAR.

INLAND EMPIRE comes to Mockingbird Cinema tonight, Sunday 18 October at 6.30pm, as part of our David Lynch Season.

Nikki Grace (Laura Dern) is an actress who has just landed the lead in a new picture. Then the picture starts to behave oddly, the lines between her role and her real life begin to smear, and nobody on set seems able to say which is which.

Doors open onto the wrong rooms. Time loses its place.

Jeremy Irons plays the director, Kingsley Stewart, and Justin Theroux is her co-star Devon Berk, with Dern in nearly every frame and carrying it with total commitment.

David Lynch wrote, directed, shot, edited and scored it himself, and it first played at the Venice Film Festival in 2006. He made it on digital video, so the whole thing has a close, grainy, slightly too-real look, like a dream you can't quite shake off over breakfast.

It runs to three hours, which is a long time to follow a plot, so we suggest following the mood instead and letting Laura Dern do the navigating.

Bring a comfy seat and a clear head. You will leave with theories, and we will not be able to confirm any of them.

CATHERINE CORLESS WOULDN’T LET THE QUESTIONS GO.

THE LOST CHILDREN OF TUAM has four screenings left at Mockingbird Cinema in Digbeth, from today, Sunday 18 October, through Thursday 22 October.

Tuam, Co. Galway. Catherine Corless is an amateur historian, and she begins examining records from a former Mother and Baby Home in the town.

What she finds points towards a deeply troubling past.

She refuses to let the questions go. Her investigation is painstaking, and it puts her in conflict with the Church, the State and the local town, none of whom had planned on an amateur historian being quite this persistent.

As official resistance mounts and unsettling discoveries emerge, her determination challenges powerful institutions.

Frank Berry directs, with Monica Dolan, Ian McElhinney, Andrew Bennett, Ruth McCabe and Lalor Roddy in the cast. It's an Irish drama from 2026, 84 minutes long, and rated 12A.

🐾 A SPOOKY FUNFAIR, FIVE SLEUTHS AND YOUR DOG.

DOG FRIENDLY: SCOOBY-DOO (2002) comes to Mockingbird Cinema on Saturday 31 October at 12pm.

Our Halloweek programme includes a doggy screening of the 2002 hit, and your four-legged friend gets a seat alongside you.

Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby have spent two years apart when they get pulled back together at a spooky amusement park, where the visitors keep running into strange happenings and somebody has to work out what is behind them.

Your dog is invited.

Sarah Michelle Gellar plays Daphne, a few years on from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, Linda Cardellini is Velma, and Matthew Lillard was praised for his uncannily excellent Shaggy.

Raja Gosnell directs, after NEVER BEEN KISSED and BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE. It is based on the characters created by William Hanna, Joseph Barbera, Iwao Takamoto, Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, and it was successful enough to get a sequel in 2004.

Nobody will judge your dog for hiding under the seat. Shaggy set that standard a long time ago.

🎙️ A NIGHT FOR BLACK BRITISH CULTURE, FROM DIGBETH.

THE WORLD REIMAGINED PRESENTS: TRIANGLE OF UNITY - BIRMINGHAM comes to Mockingbird Cinema on Thursday 29 October at 6pm.

We are hosting an evening to celebrate Black British culture and the many contributions it has made to Birmingham and well beyond.

The night premieres the documentary Community: Becoming Black & British - Birmingham, which looks at the years from the 1970s to 2000, when Black community organisations emerged across the UK and enriched society in ways that still shape everyday life.

The stories come first.

Rakeem Omar of BBC Radio 1Xtra hosts the evening, with further short films on the bill, and the whole night is presented by The World Reimagined, a charity that works for racial justice and amplifies marginalised voices through art, education and activism.

Our screen is a good deal bigger than a radio, but we trust he will cope.

🍷 FIVE W**ES FOR A VERY RAIN-SOAKED GOTHIC CITY.

THE CROW WITH W**E screens at Mockingbird Cinema on Sunday 25 October at 3pm.

The W**e Events Company brings a moody, atmospheric screening of THE CROW to Digbeth, matched with five darkly elegant w**es.

Eric Draven (Brandon Lee), a rock musician, is resurrected to put right a terrible wrong done to him and his fiancée. A mysterious crow guides him through the city.

It rains constantly.

Alex Proyas directs this 1994 adaptation of James O'Barr's 1989 comic book, with Michael Wincott, Rochelle Davis and Ernie Hudson as Sergeant Albrecht, and he went on to make DARK CITY, I, ROBOT and KNOWING, so he clearly never lost his taste for a gloomy skyline.

It is part action, part tragedy and part poetic revenge story, all candlelit gothic rooftops and slanting rain.

Eric has a rough few days in this film. Your Sunday afternoon, with a glass in hand, should go rather better.

🪴 THE NEW PLANT IN SKID ROW HAS A GREAT SINGING VOICE.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS returns to the big screen at Mockingbird Cinema on Saturday 24 October at 5pm, as part of our Musical Season.

Seymour Krelborn is a nerdy orphan who works in a flower shop on Skid Row, where Mr. Mushnik berates him daily and the colleague he adores, Audrey, has not quite noticed him.

Then he finds a mysterious plant nobody can identify and names it Audrey II. It has a tremendous appetite, and before long it has a tremendous voice to go with it.

Something is growing.

Rick Moranis leads, with Ellen Greene and Vincent Gardenia, in Frank Oz's adaptation of the 1982 off-Broadway musical by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, which was itself spun from Roger Corman's 1960 film, and which gave Oz his first film project outside the Henson camp.

It is a shop full of big songs, bigger leaves and one very demanding customer.

Anyone with a windowsill of houseplants may want to apologise to them on the way home.

🥀 ONE WEDDING REHEARSAL, TWO VERY DIFFERENT BRIDES.

CO**SE BRIDE returns to the big screen at Mockingbird Cinema tonight, Saturday 17 October at 6.15pm, as part of our Tim Burton Season.

Victor Van Dort is about to be married in a 19th-century European village. Then he is whisked down to the underworld and wed to a bride who is, to put it kindly, no longer among the living.

Back above ground, his real bride waits bereft.

The vows go sideways.

Johnny Depp voices Victor, Helena Bonham Carter is Emily, the bride of the title, and Emily Watson is Victoria, the fiancée left sitting in the land of the living while her wedding plans drift further and further out of reach.

Burton's film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2005 and takes its starting point from The Finger, a tale in Howard Schwartz's 1987 collection Lilith's Cave: Jewish Tales of the Supernatural.

Victor now has two brides and one set of vows, which is a seating plan no wedding planner has ever been trained for.

🍷 FIVE W**ES AND ONE VERY LONG WINTER AT THE OVERLOOK.

THE SHINING WITH W**E screens at Mockingbird Cinema on Friday 30 October at 7pm.

The W**e Events Company is back in Digbeth to host an evening of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, with five w**es chosen to go alongside it.

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job minding a remote mountain hotel through the off-season, and moves in with his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and their son Danny (Danny Lloyd), while the building quietly makes it clear that it has company of its own.

The snow keeps falling.

Kubrick co-wrote the screenplay with novelist Diane Johnson, adapting Stephen King's 1977 novel, and the film arrived in 1980 with Nicholson in a mood that gets steadily harder to talk him out of as the weeks go by.

The Torrances had no w**e list at all, which feels like exactly where it all went wrong, so we are fixing that for you with a glass in hand and a seat facing the big screen.

Sip slowly. It is a long film and the hotel has all the time in the world.
