She plays Helen who turns to falconry following the death of her father (played by Brendan Gleeson). Training her goshawk is physically and emotionally draining but Helen's journey teaches her how to navigate her profound loss.

(15), a divorce-comedy that has transposed the story to America, a couple's marriage (Will Arnett and Laura Dern) is quietly unravelling. Next Thursday's film (30th April) is a 'Critics Choice' screening. This means it has been given rave reviews across the world. It's an Indian film (with subtitles) called All We Imagine As Light (15).
Among other awards it won the Foreign Language BAFTA and Cannes Grand Prix. It's the story of three women: a jaded nurse abandoned by her husband; her bold and fiery roommate; and a widow facing eviction. Should they conform with or rebel against the country's norms?

Thursday's film (23 April) is The Choral, a gentle yet poignant British film written by Alan Bennett. Set during the First World War it contrasts the joy of music with the grim reality of what's happening in France. Ralph Fiennes plays a new choirmaster struggling to keep the town's choral together when all the fit young men are destined for the front. It features a cast of fine British actors who you'll recognise.

It was nominated for five Oscars and won two: Best Actor (Michael B Jordan) and Best Music. Jordan plays both twin brothers who return to the Mississippi delta to set up a Blues Club. What is it about them and their fervent music that opens up the gates of hell to let the vampires in?

BOOK EARLY for next Thursday's film (26 March) 'One Battle After Another' (15). It was nominated for 13 Oscars and won six of them including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Sean Penn took the Best Supporting actor prize.
Leonardo di Caprio plays the main character, Bob. He is a washed-up revolutionary surviving off-grid in a state of stoned paranoia with his spirited daughter. When an old enemy (Penn) resurfaces their lives are in danger. Bob has to get his head back together to save them both.
Like many others the Observer critic gave it the 5-star highest rating saying: "This uninhibited, wild ride of a film is a thriller, an absurdist comic caper, and a clear-eyed and ferociously angry political satire. It feels as acutely of the moment as it’s possible – one of the most exciting cinematic events of the year."
