From Basingstoke Through The Years :-)
Always nice to find unfamiliar photos ... shame it's not possible to see what film was listed on the canopy!
Lower Wote Street in 1961 was alive with movement and everyday bustle. Traffic still flowed freely up and down the street in those days, long before the town centre redevelopment and pedestrianisation reshaped the area. The Waldorf Cinema stood as a familiar landmark, its sign rising above the surrounding shops and drawing people toward the heart of town. Outside Jacksons, a sizeable crowd gathered under umbrellas and coats, queuing patiently for the next bus as the rain came down. Vintage cars lined the kerb, their rounded shapes and old registration plates marking the era. The whole scene captures a moment in time when Wote Street was still a busy through‑route, full of life, noise, and the rhythm of a growing town. Any thoughts on this great image?
