How it all began...
In 2011, in search of new and creative ideas and looking to enhance the costume department, Area 51 Design stumbled upon a unique and interesting digitigrade stilt being produced by Weta Labs. Intrigued and imagining the endless possibilities this would open up in regards to creature creation and costume design we excitedly got in touch to purchase a pair of our very own. To ou
r absolute dismay we discovered that Weta were no longer producing the product but our minds had been made up, we NEEDED a pair of these fascinating stilts and were on a mission to make this happen. Discovering Kim Graham as the original inventor we got straight in touch to enquire as to how we could now get hold of a set. Kim explained that she had originally created the stilts for a one off movie production and the product was essentially no longer being produced meaning we weren’t going to be able to get hold of a pair, however the licence to manufacture was up for the taking...
Realising we would not only be able to own as many pairs as we desired we would also have the opportunity to bring this fabulous creation to fellow creatives around the globe we enthusiastically came to an agreement and the licence became ours. After months upon months of tweaking and rigorous testing Digilegs were eagerly launched to the public in the Autumn of 2011 and have sold hundreds of pairs worldwide to date. Our thanks goes out to Kim who had this to say upon completion of the finalised concept;
“Congratulations to Area 51 and my co-inventors! Laura once told me that a reverse leg stilt was the "Holy Grail" of costuming. We started wanting to make the perfect werewolf costume and ended up being a part of something far more important. Congratulations again! These legs are everything we set out to do so long ago”.
