In April 2013, The Birks Cinema re-opened its doors to the public as a wee friendly state-of-the art cinema, after a 20 year interlude. This followed a determined fundraising campaign by The Friends of The Birks Cinema which brought in generous support and donations from the Big Lottery Fund, the Scottish Rural Development Program, Creative Scotland, and many other donors, including a huge number of Highland Perthshire residents. Together, they raised the £2.2 million necessary to purchase The Birks Cinema building and bring it back to life as a community hub, while retaining its iconic Art-Noveau exterior. Since then, The Birks Cinema Trust has worked hard at developing a friendly local community hub, both commercially and socially. The world fell in love with Jane Austen more than 200 years ago, and now it’s time to relive her first novel and experience Sense & Sensibility on the Birks Big Screen. Georgia Oakley adapts Jane Austen’s story of love, family, and sisterhood, with Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Esmé Creed-Miles as the Dashwood sisters Elinor and Marianne.

What is the connection between language and the land around us? 💬

Join us for a morning of film and discussion exploring land, language and literacy from Latin America to Gaelic Scotland in partnership with Havana Glasgow Film Festival. 🇨🇺

We're proud to be screening three powerful films: My First Calling from Cuba, Clay Woman from Mexico and CEARTAS from Scotland. With attention to how language shapes the land, and the land shapes language, our panel will discuss the intersections between Spanish, Gaelic and indigenous American languages, and the ways they are presented in film and our cultures more broadly.
