Glimpses from last Thursday’s event, The Archive We Carry: Voices from Sudan and Palestine.

On Thursday evening, we came together for an open discussion with Samar Dweidar and Fatma Salah, moderated by Batool El Henawy.

The discussion explored oral history and community archives as counter-archival practices and tools of cultural resistance in contexts of erasure, loss, diaspora, and dominant narratives.

The conversation took place as part of the Azza…Gaza film program, held simultaneously in Cairo, Ramallah, and Nairobi, in collaboration with Zawya, FilmLab Palestine, and Sudan Film Factory, and supported by NAAS.

🔹 سمر دويدار: مؤسِّسة مبادرة «حكايات فلسطينية» للأرشيفات العائلية والأبحاث، التي توثّق الذاكرة الفلسطينية من خلال الأرشيفات العائلية والشهادات الحية. تعمل حاليًا على توثيق أصوات الناس في غزة منذ بدء حرب الإبادة في أكتوبر 2023.

🔹 فاطمة صلاح: باحثة ومؤرشِفة، تنطلق من خلفية معرفية في العلوم الاجتماعية والأنثروبولوجيا. تعمل كاتبة محتوى وقيمة موسيقى لدى أرشيف أنغام النيل، وتعمل في الأرشفة ضمن مشروع سوداناهي لتوثيق تراث مجتمع السودانيين الأرمن، كما تشارك في مشروع التراث الثقافي للمهاجرين واللاجئين (Traces of Mobility). عملت سابقًا بالبحث والأرشفة في أرشيف شبرا، وتهتم بالتراث والتاريخ والتوثيق والعمل الأرشيفي المجتمعي.

🔵 تدير النقاش بتول الحناوي: فنانة ومبرمجة مهتمة بمساحات التعاون من خلال نقاط بداية لمشاريع قد تتخذ أشكالًا أخرى في المستقبل، باستخدام وسائط مثل النص والصورة (المتحركة). درست التصوير الجداري في كلية الفنون الجميلة، جامعة حلوان، وتعمل حاليًا منسقة برامج في مركز الصورة المعاصرة.

A conversation with Samar Dweidar, Founder of Palestinian Stories, and Fatma Salah, Researcher and Archivist, moderated by Programmer Batool El Henawy.

What becomes of history and memory when archives are lost, destroyed, occupied, or made inaccessible? How voices, memories, and the textures of everyday life become a living archive, carried by people and preserved through participatory acts of remembrance?

Join us for a discussion that foregrounds oral history and community archives as counter-Archival practices, and authentic tools for cultural resistance against erasure, loss, diaspora, dominant and colonial narratives.

We’re pleased to announce the screening schedule of “Azza … Gaza” - a film program curated in solidarity between and with Sudan and Palestine. Taking place simultaneously across three cities, it brings together Sudanese and Palestinian cinema across generations to explore narratives of war, displacement, loss, resistance, survival, and collective memory.

من المعمل إلى الجنينة! احتفلنا باكتمال البرنامج التطوعي لحفظ وأرشفة الأفلام الأنالوج. على مدار ثلاثة أشهر سعدنا بوجود ودعم متطوعينا ومتحمسين للقاءات أكثر معهم ومع متطوعين جدد. 🎞️

Out and about away from the analog lab! We celebrated our volunteers and the completion of the three-month program for analog film preservation. Over the volunteering period we were blessed with the volunteers’ efforts and we look forward to more encounters with them and with more volunteers! 🎞️

شكرًا لكل اللي انضم الينا يوم الثلاثاء اللي فات للنسخة الخامسة من برنامج "اسم مؤقت" مع المخرجة ايتن أمين.✨

"اسم مؤقت" هو برنامج لقاءات دورية لعرض مسودات من أفلام مكتملة، يتبعها مناقشة مع أصحاب الأعمال.

شاركتنا ايتن فيلمها القصير الأول (راجلها، ٢٠٠٦) المأخوذ عن قصة قصيرة بنفس الاسم للكاتبة أهداف سويف تم نشرها في مجموعة قصصية بعنوان "عائشة". ثم عرضنا مسودات من فيلم ايتن الطويل الأول (فيلا ٦٩، ٢٠١٣) وتلاه نقاش مع ايتن وكاتب السيناريو محمد الحاج. وأخيرًا عرضنا مسودات من فيلم (سعاد، ٢٠٢٠) وناقشنا رحلة صناعة الفيلم وعلاقته بفيلم (دعاء الكروان، ١٩٥٩).

شكر خاص لايتن أمين ومحمد الحاج لكرمهم الشديد في مشاركة أعمالهم، وللجمهور على وقتهم وطاقتهم.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Tuesday for the fifth edition of “Working Title” with filmmaker Ayten Amin.✨

“Working Title” is a periodical gathering that showcases drafts of completed films, followed by open discussions with their makers.

Ayten shared with us her first short film Her Man (2006), adapted from the short story of the same title by Ahdaf Soueif, originally published in the collection Aisha.

We then screened drafts from her debut feature Villa 69 (2013), followed by a conversation with Ayten and the film’s screenwriter, Mohamed El Haj.

Finally, we explored drafts of Souad (2020), discussing the film’s making process and its relation to The Nightingale’s Prayer (1959).

A special thank you to Ayten Amin and Mohamed El Haj for their generosity in sharing their work, and to our audience for their time and energy.

نحاول في هذا البرنامج إيجاد شكل آخر للحديث عن الأفلام بمعزل عن النزعة التقييمية أو الأحكام الخالصة. نعود بالزمن لزيارة لحظة محددة في حياة الفيلم، لنقطتعها من سياقها الأوسع، حتى تصبح فرصة لنتأمل الاحتمالات، الآمال، والمخاوف الكامنة بها.

انطلاقًا من رؤية للفيلم كوسيط ممتد غير متمحور حول المنتج النهائي، نأمل ان نعيد إحياء ديناميكية ربما فقدت مع لحظة اكتمال العمل. نتخيل من خلال هذا البرنامج مساحة هامشية تسمح لنا بالبوح عما قررنا مسبقًا أن نخفيه.

“Working Title” is a series of periodical gatherings that showcase drafts of completed films, followed by open discussions with the filmmakers.

Rooted in the view of film as an extended medium, rather than one oriented solely toward the final product, each gathering revisits a specific moment in the life of a film, one suspended between process and resolution.

Hoping to revive a dynamic state that might have been lost at the moment of the film’s completion, we imagine through this program a marginal space where we can express what we have previously decided to conceal.

“Who Carries The Gaze?!” is going to the Arab Experimental Film Festival in Berlin!

The workshop on critical editing curated and moderated by Salma El Tarzi explored questions of aesthetics, gaze, and gender within representations of desire in mainstream Egyptian cinema.

Two work groups produced video essays dissecting and analyzing Egyptian films. The videos will be on loop from 5-10 pm on October 19th.

The workshop is supported by The Embassy of The Netherlands in Egypt.

استخدمت ورشة العمل المونتاج كأداة للبحث والتحليل بالعمل على مشاهد أيقونية من السينما المصرية.

من خلال مجموعتين عمل، طرح المشاركين/ات أسئلة عن
الجماليات، النظرة، والجندر في تمثيلات الرغبة في السينما المصرية السائدة.

سيتم عرض فيديوهات مقالية تم انتاجها من قبل المشاركين/ات خلال الورشة، تعرض الفيديوهات في حلقة مستمرة من الساعة 5 ال 10 مساءً يوم 19 أكتوبر.

تمت الورشة بدعم من سفارة هولندا في مصر.
