With profound sadness, we remember Eva Schloss, Holocaust survivor, author, educator, and tireless witness to one of humanity’s darkest chapters, who passed away at the age of 96. With her passing, the world has lost another precious firsthand voice from a generation that endured the unimaginable. Yet Eva leaves behind far more than testimony; she leaves the extraordinary story of a young girl whose childhood was stolen by persecution, whose family was torn apart by the Holocaust, and who emerged from that darkness determined that those who were lost would never be forgotten. 🕊️

Born Eva Geiringer on May 11, 1929, in Vienna, Austria, she grew up alongside her parents, Erich and Fritzi, and her beloved older brother, Heinz. Her childhood was forever changed after N**i Germany annexed Austria in 1938. Facing escalating persecution as a Jewish family, the Geiringers fled their homeland and eventually settled in Amsterdam, hoping they had found safety. But when the N**is occupied the Netherlands, persecution followed them once again.

By 1942, the family was forced into hiding. Eva remained with her mother while her father and Heinz hid separately. For nearly two years they lived with the constant fear of discovery, holding onto the hope that one day they would be reunited.

That hope was shattered on May 11, 1944, Eva’s 15th birthday. Their hiding place had been betrayed. Eva and her family were arrested and eventually deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she was separated from her father and brother. She would never see them again.

Eva and her mother endured hunger, disease, forced labor, selections, brutality, and the daily terror of a place built for suffering and death. At an age when she should have been discovering the possibilities of adulthood, Eva was instead learning how to survive from one day to the next.

On January 27, 1945, Auschwitz was liberated. Eva and her mother had survived, but freedom brought devastating news. Her father and Heinz had died during the final months of the Holocaust. Eva had survived the camp only to return to a world in which two of the people she loved most would never come home.

The loss of Heinz remained especially painful. He had been a talented young man who painted, wrote poetry, and dreamed of a future the Holocaust denied him. Some of the paintings he created while the family was in hiding were later recovered, becoming haunting reminders that behind every Holocaust victim was an individual with hopes, talents, relationships, and dreams.

After the war, Eva and her mother returned to Amsterdam, where they reconnected with Otto Frank, the only surviving member of his immediate family. In 1953, Eva’s mother married Otto, making Eva the posthumous stepsister of Anne Frank. But Eva Schloss should never be remembered simply through that connection. She carried an extraordinary story of her own, as a survivor, a grieving daughter and sister, and eventually one of the important voices of Holocaust remembrance.

For decades, speaking about Auschwitz was deeply painful. Eva moved to Britain, married Zvi Schloss, raised three daughters, and built a new life. Eventually, she found the strength to break her silence. From the 1980s onward, she devoted much of her life to telling her story, educating younger generations about antisemitism, prejudice, hatred, and the terrible consequences of dehumanizing others.

She wrote about her experiences, recorded her testimony, spoke to countless audiences, and dedicated herself to ensuring that those who had been murdered, including her father and brother, would never simply become numbers in a history book. Her contribution to Holocaust education was recognized with her appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Perhaps Eva’s greatest legacy lies not only in the fact that she survived, but in what she chose to do with her survival. The Holocaust had taken her childhood, her father, her brother, and much of the world she once knew. Yet she refused to surrender their memory to silence. She transformed unimaginable grief into testimony and survival into a lifelong responsibility to remember.

With Eva’s passing, another living connection to Auschwitz has disappeared. Future generations will increasingly know this history through photographs, recordings, documents, and the testimonies survivors left behind rather than by hearing their voices in person. That makes Eva’s words more precious than ever.

Today, we remember not only the frightened fifteen-year-old girl who was betrayed on her birthday and sent to Auschwitz, but the remarkable woman she became, a survivor, mother, author, educator, and witness who spent decades ensuring that the world would remember.

Rest in peace, Eva Schloss, your voice may have fallen silent, but your testimony remains.
