goEast Film Festival goEast – Festival of Central and Eastern European Film

Launched in 2001 by Deutsches Filminstitut, goEast revolves around films made in Central and Eastern Europe. For seven days, goEast unfolds a diverse programme encompassing cinematic trends, experimental positions and historical rarities in Wiesbaden. The agenda of goEast, conceived as a forum of east-west dialogue, is dominated by questions of (multiple) European identities and processes of rapid

social and political transformation. The programme expresses a cultural mission: to provide a public platform for remarkable, unusual and engaged films unlikely to find distribution on the commercial cinema circuit. Festival visitors, including filmmakers and industry specialists from Germany and abroad, local film enthusiasts and international guests, praise the quality and special atmosphere of a festival that facilitates the exchange of skills and knowledge each year. goEast is dedicated to the cinematic experience, to new developments and topical themes, to the artistic heritage of eastern European film.

Wir waren als Team zu Gast bei der 60. Ausgabe des Karlovy Vary International Film Festival vertreten.

An vier Festivaltagen sichteten wir neue Filme, trafen bekannte und neue Gesichter aus Mittel- und Osteuropa und konnten die super Festivalstimmung genießen. 🎬✨

Zu den Highlights gehörten neben den Filmvorführungen großartige NetzwGerman Filmstungen °efp | european film promotionermanfCreative Europe MEDIA Desks DEeuropeanfilmpromotion und .filme, der Eastern European LuncFilmFestival Cottbus (FFC)tbus und dem sowie die Czech & Slovak Film Party des CzSlovak Film Instituteal Fund, des , des Slovak Audiovisual Fund und der Union of Czech Film Indusrty and Barrandov Studio.
Hier konnten wir gut Kontakte knüpfen!

Mit vielen neuen Eindrücken im Gepäck freuen wir uns schon auf die nächsten Festivalreisen und unsere nächste eigene Festivalausgabe – und wo wir hoffentlich viele von euch wiedersehen!

Our team attended the 60th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Over the course of four festival days, we watched new films, met familiar and new faces from Central and Eastern Europe, and enjoyed the fantastic festival atmosphere. 🎬✨

In addition to the film screenings, the highlights included some great networking events such as the reception by German Films, the European Film Promotion and Creative Europe MEDIA Desk; the East European Lunch organized by Connecting Cottbus and the FilmFestival Cottbus; and the Czech & Slovak Film Party, organized by the Czech Audiovisual Fund, the Slovak Film Institute, the Slovak Audiovisual Fund and the Union of Czech Film Indusrty and Barrandov Studio.
We were able to make some great connections here!

With so many new experiences under our belts, we’re already looking forward to our next festival trips and our next festival—where we hope to see many of you again!

From 17–21 June, Programme Coordinator Charlotte Heusler and EWTL Coordinator Andrea Wink .wink.exground attended the Transylvania International Film Festival in Cluj, which this year celebrated its 25th anniversary edition. Spreading across Cluj's centre with indoor and outdoor screenings, the festival creates a special atmosphere in the city, bringing together a large local audience.
Next to the international competition and industry programme, the sections dedicated to current Hungarian and Romanian cinema were a wonderful opportunity to delve deeper into the cinema of the region. Part of the jury for the international competition was a familiar face: Ivana Mladenović, winner of the Award of the City of Wiesbaden for Best Director for SORELLA DI CLAUSURA at goEast in April!

Vom 17. bis 21. Juni besuchten Programmkoordinatorin Charlotte Heusler und EWTL-Koordinatorin Andrea Wink das Transylvania International Film Festival in Cluj, das in diesem Jahr sein 25-jähriges Jubiläum feierte. Mit Vorführungen an verschiedenen Spielorten in der ganzen Stadt sowohl in Kinos als auch in Openairkinos schafft das Festival eine besondere Atmosphäre und zieht ein breites lokales Publikum an.
Neben dem internationalen Wettbewerb und dem Industryprogramm boten die Sektionen zu Ungarischen und Rumänischen Kino eine schöne Gelegenheit, tiefere Einblicke in die lokalen Filmlandschaft zu bekommen.
Teil der Jury für den internationalen Wettbewerb war ein bekanntes Gesicht: Ivana Mladenović, die für SORELLA DI CLAUSURA bei goEast im April mit dem Preis der Landeshauptstadt Wiesbaden für die Beste Regie ausgezeichnet wurde!

Ein letzter Vorstellungspost unseres diesjährigen Teams darf natürlich nicht fehlen! 🫶

Zum abschließenden Team Tuesday stellen wir euch Symposiumskuratorin Borjana und ihre Assistentin Luisa vor. Gemeinsam waren die beiden für das Symposium verantwortlich und haben während der Festivalwoche ein vielfältiges Programm rund um das Thema „Filmische Strategien des Widerstands“ veranstaltet. Mit Filmen, Filmgesprächen und Vorträgen lud das Symposium dazu ein, unterschiedliche Perspektiven kennenzulernen.

For our final Team Tuesday, we’d like to introduce you to symposium curator Borjana and her assistant Luisa. Together, the two were responsible for the symposium and organized a diverse program centered on the theme “Cinematic Strategies of Resistance” during the festival week. With films, film discussions, and lectures, the symposium invited attendees to explore different perspectives.

Throwback zum East-West Talent Lab, das vom 24.04.-27.04.26 stattfand. Vier Tage vollgepackt mit Workshops, Lectures, Begegnungen und wertvollem Feedback. 🫂

Jedes Jahr lädt goEast junge Dokumentarfilmschaffende aus Mittel- und Osteuropa, dem Kaukasus und Zentralasien sowie Produzent*innen aus Deutschland ein. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Austausch, neue Impulse und kreative Zusammenarbeit: Teilnehmende haben die Möglichkeit, Kontakte zu knüpfen, Projekte weiterzuentwickeln, an Workshops teilzunehmen, Filme zu entdecken und eigene Ideen in inspirierender Atmosphäre vorzustellen.

Wir bedanken uns bei allen Teilnehmenden, bei allen Experts und bei der Jury, die nach den Projekt Pitches am letzten Abend Preise verliehen hat. Preisträgerin des Renovabis Research Grant: Mihaela Drãgan (I ONLY PRAY TO SARA KALI), der Pitch the Doc Award ging an Trëndelina Halili (DREAMS COVERED IN CHROME) und die Special Mention ging an Kyrylo Naumko (ROUND GLASSES).

A look back at the East-West Talent Lab, which took place from April 24–27, 2026. Four days packed with workshops, lectures, networking opportunities, and valuable feedback. 🫂

Every year, goEast invites young documentary filmmakers from Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, as well as producers from Germany. The focus is on exchange, new inspiration, and creative collaboration: participants have the opportunity to network, develop projects, take part in workshops, discover films, and present their own ideas in an inspiring atmosphere.

We would like to thank all the participants, all the experts, and the jury, who presented the awards following the project pitches on the final evening. The winner of the Renovabis Research Grant is Mihaela Drãgan (I ONLY PRAY TO SARA KALI); the Pitch the Doc Award went to Trëndelina Halili (DREAMS COVERED IN CHROME); and the Special Mention went to Kyrylo Naumko (ROUND GLASSES).

Am Montagabend unserer Festivalwoche durften wir gemeinsam einen besonderen Abschluss feiern. In festlicher Atmosphäre kamen Filmschaffende, Gäste und unser Team zusammen, um auf eine ereignisreiche Woche voller Begegnungen und Kinomomente zurückzublicken.🫶 Ein riesiges Dankeschön an alle Beteiligten, die diese Woche so besonders gemacht haben und danke an Volodymyr Romániuk, der diese Augenblicke mit seiner Kamera festgehalten hat.

On Monday evening of our festival week, we had the pleasure of celebrating a special closing event together. In a festive atmosphere, filmmakers, guests, and our team came together to look back on an eventful week full of encounters and cinematic moments. 🫶 A huge thank you to everyone involved who made this week so special, and thank you to Volodymyr Romániuk for capturing these moments with his camera.
