For a little while

Thursday night in the foyer at Kinemathek, the artist duo IRIS-A-MAZ explore that very sentiment with their years-in-the-making video and audio installation Himmelssturz, presented in the 32:9, 11-meter-wide glory that is the mighty PhonoLuxMaschine.

IRIS-A-MAZ, otherwise known as Iris Holstein and Matthias Hederer, draw inspiration from Renaissance painting while exploring the idea of falling both as catastrophe and as liberation.

From 19:00 in the main foyer at Kinemathek (located in the Kaiserpassage).

Join us and some of the finest minds in Karlsruhe this Thursday for a screening of the reggae cinematic tour de force: Rockers (1978).

A raw, roots-soaked tale of David vs. Goliath set in Kingston, starring the legendary drummer Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace and a cast of his contemporaries. The music alone is worth the price of admission.

18:00 Rum drinks in the foyer
19:30 The Commodore's personal introduction and perhaps a bit of drifting story time
19:40ish Film begins

The Speakeasy Cinema is a unique feature not only in the Karlsruhe cultural landscape, but pretty much anywhere. And that’s how I like to do it: make it cool, but keep it cheap. It’s been my modus operandi for years.

In fact, the Speakeasy is a direct descendent of the Commodore’s Cocktail Cinema. And we all know what that descended from. I mean, don’t we?

For those that don’t know, I’ll just tell you. The Commodore’s Cocktail Cinema was the eponymous outlet for a network of vinyl hustlers and cocktail operators that sprang from the Commodore Room, that most Karlsruhe of co-working spaces, one that pre-dated anything similar. And I’m not tooting my own horn, but it was amazing.

Go see a movie and have a drink on Mondays. Can’t tell you what the movie will be, but live a little.

18:00 – Bar
19:30 – Film

Speakeasy Cinema rides again! This and every Monday at Kinemathek Karlsruhe e.V., buy a drink, see a film. Which one nobody knows until the opening credits roll.

Or choose to see what's behind Door #2 upstairs in The Box. An even more mysterious offering awaits.

Tomorrow night at the already enigmatic Speakeasy Cinema, we continue our January exploration of alternative cinematic choices with Door #2.

Door #2 takes place in our smaller theater, The Box, and runs in parallel to the film showing in the Main Saal. Upon arrival, simply let the staff know if you would prefer Door #2.

A brief note of orientation: Door #2 allows for a wider range of programming. Films may be longer, stranger, more challenging, more risqué, potentially more offensive… or not. The only real recommendation is to arrive with flexible expectations.

Door #2 is intended for viewers who are comfortable with uncertainty in their movie-going, including the fact that Speakeasy Cinema already asks you to arrive without knowing the film in advance. In that sense, Door #2 simply adds another layer of not knowing, for those inclined to ride the snake and see where it leads.
