Springforelle - Fly Fishing Shop

Springforelle - Fly Fishing Shop Split-cane rods, fine fly fishing tools, fly casting tuition

SPRINGFORELLE’s PHILOSOPHY

My aim is to bring more quality to the fly fisher by offering special products which are not available everywhere, selected films and casting workshops. SPRINGFORELLE’s HISTORY

It all sparked off in 2003 with the translation and production of Mel Krieger’s book “The Essence of Fly Casting” for the German speaking fly fisher. It continued with tours in Europe with Mel,

bringing in first handmade fly fishing tools into the web-shop, and testing products from small businesses. Nowadays Springforelle’s customers enjoy highly selected, very best quality fly fishing tools, qualified advice, and efficient workshops (1 teacher for 3 pupils). SPRINGFORELLE’s GOALS

I want to build connections and engage my customers on Springforelle’s page, and inspire them to shop in my web-store.

2. International Lồ ô Rod Makers Gathering in Milow

After two years of practical experience, all participants agreed that Lồ ô can be used to make rods that are just as excellent as those made from Tonkin. When manufacturing multi-piece rods, Lồ ô has the advantage that the long internodes allow for nodeless construction, which makes the work much easier. In the case of double-handed rods, it is advantageous that they are noticeably lighter than Tonkin rods due to the lower density of Lồ ô. In addition, this bamboo species is very easy to split. It has also proved very popular in the manufacture of bows, arrows and violin bows.

Interested in rodmaking history? Read the first part of my publication about Floyd Alonzo McClure. He discovered the provenience of Tonkin, classified and named this bamboo species as Arundinaria amabilis var. sativa.

Another successful Lồ ô rod test, this time in Swedish Lapland. BTW a Lồ ô rod is about 10 % lighter than one from Tonkin. A remarkable difference, especially with longer rods.

Lồ ô info no. 14

On the left a Lồ ô-, on the right a Tonkin culm, where each internode and its diameter were measured. To better visualise the shape of the culm, the length (m) was compressed in relation to the diameter (mm). Interestingly, in both bamboo species, the 10th to 15th internodes are the longest (between the red dots, dark and light green area). In the Lồ ô they are on average 85 cm (34 ") long and in the Tonkin 50 cm (20 ") long. Traditionally, only the lowest 12 feet of the Tonkin are harvested (yellow and light green area). This means that most of the long internodes of the Tonkin do not reach the rod maker. The entire green area of the Lồ ô was harvested.
