Berlinale - Berlin International Film Festival

Berlinale - Berlin International Film Festival Feb 10-21, 2027. One of the largest public film festivals & a forum for the global film community.
(4737)

The Berlinale is a unique place of artistic exploration and entertainment. It is one of the largest public film festivals in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors from around the globe each year. For the film industry and the media, the eleven days in February are also one of the most important events in the annual calendar and an indispensable trading forum. The Berlin International

Film Festival enjoys an eventful history. The festival was created for the Berlin public in 1951, at the beginning of the Cold War, as a “showcase of the free world”. Shaped by the turbulent post-war period and the unique situation of a divided city, the Berlinale has developed into a place of intercultural exchange and a platform for the critical cinematic exploration of social issues. To this day it is considered the most political of all the major film festivals. The Berlinale brings the big stars of international cinema to Berlin and discovers new talents. It accompanies filmmakers of all disciplines on their paths into the spotlight and supports careers, projects, dreams, and visions. Thanks to its numerous industry initiatives, the Berlinale is a significant driver of innovation and an important economic factor internationally as well as for companies in Germany and Berlin.

We celebrate two remarkable Berlinale World Cinema Fund-supported films recognised at this year’s Cannes Film Festival:

Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo’s “Ben’Imana” made history as the first Rwandan film selected for the festival’s Official Selection and went on to win the Caméra d’Or. The film also won the FIPRESCI International Critics’ Prize and is the first film to receive the TUI Care Foundation Award of the World Cinema Fund, introduced in 2024.

Abinash Bikram Shah’s “Elephants in the Fog”, the first Nepali film ever selected for Un Certain Regard, received the Jury Prize in the section.

Both directors are Berlinale Talents alumni. Congratulations to the filmmakers, producers and entire creative teams behind these extraordinary works. We are proud that the WCF could support these bold cinematic voices!

We also celebrate the success of many more Berlinale Talents alumni at Cannes, among them Katrin Pors and Jussi Rantamäki, co-producers of this year’s Palme d’Or winner “Fjord”.

Congratulations to all winners at this year’s Cannes Film Festival!

South Africa will be the European Film Market’s “Country in Focus” at the Berlinale in 2027!

As one of Africa’s most globally integrated and diversified economies, South Africa is home to a dynamic and internationally connected film industry that combines creative excellence, strong production capabilities and growing global market relevance. With internationally acclaimed filmmakers, diverse storytelling traditions, world-class crews, and competitive production infrastructure, the country has established itself as a key partner for the international film and media industry.

South African cinema has long been part of the Berlinale’s history. Over the past decades, South African filmmakers and productions have regularly been represented across the festival and market programmes, reflecting the country’s creative diversity and international resonance. In 2005, “U-Carmen eKhayelitsha” by Mark Dornford-May became the first South African film to win the Berlinale’s Golden Bear, marking a milestone in the festival’s relationship with the country’s cinema.

“South Africa’s designation as the European Film Market’s ‘Country in Focus’ for 2027 reflects both its longstanding relationship with the Berlinale and the extraordinary vitality of its film industry. South African cinema brings together powerful storytelling, remarkable creative voices and a strong international outlook. We are excited to shine a spotlight on a film culture that continues to shape global conversations and to create new opportunities for collaboration between South African and international partners at the EFM”, says Festival Director Tricia Tuttle.
