Cinema Total is a politico-cultural initiative, created 2008 by the director of .CHB János Can Togay (screenwriter and film director). The goal of this specialised programme is to stimulate the cooperation of the film industries of Central and Eastern Europe, reflecting all aspects of the industry from funding to distribution. Cinema Total’s focus in 2014 is the intersection of film and video art.
We are interested in what we feel is an increasing cross-over of filmmakers who make films for cinema, but also create gallery-based work, such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Benedek Fliegauf. The first edition of Cinema Total in 2008 was in fact an exhibition of the works of Hungarian filmmakers and video artists, including Benedek Fliegauf’s film MILKYWAY, which was shown both in cinemas and galleries. So in a sense, this 7th edition of Cinema Total returns back to its origins. This intersection will be explored through a panel discussion with artists, filmmakers and curators, as well as a selection of video art by filmmakers and an installation of global collaborative art, created through an open call to filmmakers, artists and any other interested users of handheld recording devices. Alongside other regular, returning events such as Pitch Stop and Film Talks, the Film-Political Roundtable also returns, concentrating this year on women in the Central and Eastern European film industry.
