CICAE - Arthouse Cinema

CICAE - Arthouse Cinema CICAE
Confédération Internationale des Cinémas d'Art et Essai
International Confederation of Arth cinema enthusiasts.

Since 1955, the CICAE has been working to promote cultural diversity in cinemas and festivals. The CICAE was founded in 1955 by the national arthouse cinema associations of Germany, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The collective and concerted action of these pioneers led to the emergence in each country of a real market for quality films, as well as national schemes aimed at supporting th

eatres that took a stand in favour of this "high-risk" cinematographic art form. The CICAE is recognized by the council of Europe, sits on the Bureau of the International Council for Film Television and Audiovisual Communication (IFTC) UNESCO, is a member of Media Salles, and has been a member of the Coalition française pour la diversité culturelle since its inception in 2003. It collaborates with Europa Cinemas, receives support from UNESCO, the European Union's MEDIA programme, the CNC (France), the FFA (Germany), the DGC (Italy), to name but a few. Today, the CICAE brings together over 4,000 screens via 11 national and regional associations (AFCAE in France, AG Kino Gilde in Germany, Schweizer Studiofilm Verband in Switzerland, FICE and AIACE in Italy, Art Mozi in Hungary, VAC in Belgium, Riksföreningen Biograferna in Sweden, Vereniging Nederlands Filmtheater Overleg in the Netherlands, AQCAE in Quebec Canada, NAAS in arabic countries), about 60 independent cinemas across the world, 14 festivals (including Berlin, Cannes, Sarajevo, Annecy, Hamburg, Sevilla, ...), as well as a number of arthouse film distributors, cinema organisations and special members (such as Solar Cinema Netherlands and Art & Experience in Iran). Objectives:
- To encourage arthouse cinemas to come together under a common umbrella at the national and international levels.
- To obtain support for arthouse films from government bodies.
- To foster the distribution of high quality films from all countries, in all countries.
- Through targeted cultural initiatives, to promote the screening of art films in order to increase audiences and foster production. In countries where the art cinema sector is well developed, arthouse films account for 10 to 25 percent of all tickets sold. Art cinema upholds the values of "quality cinema that knows no borders", although, de facto, the bulk is made up of European productions and co-productions. Statistics show that in several countries arthouse cinemas draw up to 80 percent of audiences for quality European films; they are also the most appropriate setting where moviegoers can discover African, Asian, Latin American and "independent" films from the USA. Thus the arthouse cinema industry is (also) a market, which connects quality films with their main "consumers", i.e.

Building on Creative Europe MEDIA’s success for Europe’s audiovisual and creative future 🎥🌍⭐

At Cannes, European organisations and networks from the film and audiovisual sector came together to express their strong support for the continued role of the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme within the new AgoraEU framework.

For more than three decades, Creative Europe MEDIA has played a vital role in strengthening Europe’s audiovisual sector, both economically and culturally.

Together with fellow European organisations and networks, CICAE supports the continuation of this uniquely effective European instrument, which has enabled companies of all sizes to collaborate, innovate, and grow across borders, while supporting creative talents from every corner of Europe.
By fostering meaningful exchange across the entire value chain: from directors, writers and independent producers to sales agents, distributors, festivals, cinemas, tech companies and audience initiatives - the programme has helped shape a truly diverse and dynamic audiovisual landscape across Europe.

Crucially, its impact reaches far beyond the industry itself: audiences across all member states benefit from access to a wide range of high-quality works reflecting the many voices and identities of Europe.

As the AgoraEU programme takes shape, we look forward to a continued strong commitment to Creative Europe MEDIA and to further strengthening Europe’s cultural and creative ecosystem for the future.

Just one day before the deadline for this year’s Arthouse Cinema Training, we’re sharing this interview with CICAE alumnus , who, together with fellow alumnus Mizero Kabano Yannick, is currently reviving — Kigali’s oldest cinema — and turning it into a space for independent film.

From a week of exchange in Berlin to building cinema infrastructures back home — this is just one example of where the training can lead.

Applications close tomorrow! Read the full interview here: https://cineuropa.org/en/index/

CICAE Executive Committee in Warsaw!

From 26–27 March 2026, the CICAE Bureau (Executive Committee) met in Warsaw, Poland, bringing together leaders from Europe’s arthouse cinema community. The programme began with a dinner with representatives from Poland’s Ministry of Culture and key industry figures, creating space for dialogue and collaboration. The following morning, the Executive Committee gathered to discuss key topics shaping the future of arthouse cinema, including European policy developments and frameworks, industry collaborations and partnerships, film market trends and cinema diversity, as well as strategic projects and the 2026 budget.

The meeting coincided with the 5th Film Education Forum at Cinema Iluzjon, giving participants the opportunity to explore innovative approaches to film education and strengthen skills across Europe. CICAE warmly thanks all participants for their engagement and looks forward to continuing collaboration in support of independent and arthouse cinema. Special thanks go to the , and especially to Marianna Cieślak, for their generous support and hospitality, and to Dominika Scheibinger-Kunecka for the great photos.

The CICAE Arthouse Cinema Awards recently took us to .toulouse, where the Films in Progress section continues to support independent Latin American films at crucial stages of completion.

A special thank you to , who represented the CICAE Arthouse Cinema Award on the jury, alongside Marie Foulon and Jakub Duszynski.

We’re happy to share that the jury recognised the film:

BATE E VOLTA COPACABANA
directed by Juliana Antunes and Camila Matos
(Brazil, 95’, work in progress)

Jury statement:
“We would like to present the Award of European Distributors and Exhibitors to BATE E VOLTA COPACABANA, a vibrant new voice from Brazil, distinguished by its rare audacity and disarming sincerity.

This film, still a work in progress, already carries within it the promise of a kind of cinema that unsettles, captivates, and above all, leaves no one indifferent. Through the power of its imagery and the freedom of its perspective on youth and sensuality, it charts a singular and courageous path.”
