Down Under Film Festival

Down Under Film Festival Down Under Film Festival is Europe’s leading event for Australian and New Zealand cinema, with events in Berlin and Copenhagen.

Down Under Berlin film festival has been a vital hub for enthusiasts of Australian and New Zealand cinema and culture since 2011. As Europe's leading festival for Australian & New Zealand film, it ranges from independent productions to blockbusters, from student and professional short films to inspiring documentaries – diversity being one of the cornerstones of the program. Taking place at Germany

’s oldest independent cinema, Moviemento Kino, Down Under Berlin thrives in the vibrant cultural atmosphere of Kreuzberg. Well known by film-lovers, the cinema stands out for its award-winning film programming, and is regularly awarded with the “Kinoprogrammpreis” by the state-run film and media funding body Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg for its important contribution to Berlin’s vital film culture. To guarantee the best and latest film highlights, the festival program consists of both submitted films and carefully selected cinematic gems. The festival has also co-operated with renowned film institutions and film schools such as the New Zealand Film Commission, Screen Australia, the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne (VCA) and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) where award-winning director Warwick Thornton began his filmmaking career. Each year the festival audience votes for its favourite films in the categories “Best Short Film” and “Best Film”, and the winning entries receive the Down Under Berlin Audience Award in the respective category. In 2018, the number of awards increased by two additional awards: the winner in each of the two rounds of the "Battle of the Shorts: AUS vs. NZ" as well as of the "Australian Short Film Today" guest reel - kindly provided by the Chris and Francesca Beale Foundation from New York.

We are deeply honoured to present alongside .ber the European Premiere of The Stolen Children of Aotearoa alongside .ber on the 7th of June at 17:00 at the Planetarium

Directed by Julian Arahanga (), this vital documentary sheds light on a dark chapter of New Zealand’s history. For decades, thousands of children, predominantly Māori, were separated from their families and placed into a state system meant to protect them, only to face systemic violence, abuse, and the stripping of their cultural identities.

Today, survivors are breaking their silence. Through incredibly raw personal testimonies and sharp historical-political analysis, the film exposes how these historical injustices remain deeply connected to ongoing colonial structures.

We loved screening 's A Thousand Odd Days at DUFF, a film that proves nuance, intimacy, and character-driven storytelling are what actually hold our attention.

Our mission has always been to bring these distinctive Aussie voices to a European stage, and this project was a perfect example of that kinship.

From screening his short Sick Day at DUFF 2024 to being named a finalist in the relaunch, Stephen is a voice to watch in genre filmmaking.

“Screening Sick Day at DUFF was incredible... I think we are quite aligned in our cultural values. It was a real honour to screen in some very distinguished company.”

What’s next? Stephen is currently developing his debut feature film, building on the world of his follow-up short, Alpha Test. We love seeing our alumni scale new heights!

What happens when creatives connect and communicate? New projects are born.

Thank you to Australian Ambassador to Germany Natasha Smith, and her always warm and friendly team, for hosting our annual Networking Brunch at the Australian embassy .

Our filmmakers had a blast connecting with likeminded creatives, and building new networks between Europe and Down Under.
