Andean Horror Film Fest

Andean Horror Film Fest The Andean Horror Film Fest offers Vancouverites some of the most interesting contemporary independent horror films produced in the Andean region of Peru.

These films (2001 - 2010) are audiovisual adaptations of Andean oral folktales, featuring such mythological monsters as the Jarjacha (a part man-part llama demon), the Pishtaco (the White assassin), the Kharisiri (the evil shaman) and the Uma (the witch with a flying head). Like any horror story, these narratives explore social insecurities, problems and aspirations, and they also resonate with th

e aftermath of the Peruvian armed conflict (1980-2000), which had a dramatic impact in the poorest areas of the Andes. The films are all set in the Peruvian Andean region, showcasing small villages and beautiful natural scenery. The aesthetics of the films reflect their artisanal production methods, as most of them were shot with digital handycams. Following this, these films share some of the spirit of B-movies, as they are very successful with their local audiences and aim to entertain. The films offer international audiences a chance to experience Andean culture through the narratives and cinematography of Andean filmmakers.
