A barrel of silver dollars is said to still lie on the bed of Opinicon Lake, not far from Chaffeys Locks. Destined to pay the workers on the Rideau Canal, it was dumped overboard by the crew of the payboat off Barrel Point in 1835, when the ship was attacked by pirates. Shots were fired. The boat crew tried their best to defend the silver, but they knew that they would not be able to hold off the ambush. Knowing they were outnumbered,
they dumped the barrel overboard so the pirates couldn’t get it. Foiled, the pirates left

CANADA DAY - July 1
🍁 Perth – Enjoy n afternoon of family activities, splash pad fun, creative face painting, and a spectacular fireworks finale. Bring your swimsuit, sunscreen, and a blanket for the hilltop show!
Conlon Farm, all day. Fireworks at 10:00 p.m.

🍁 Smiths Falls – Head to the park for a bustling vendor market, Family Fun Zone, bike parade, NEW sensory play area, an 80 ft zipline, live entertainment, beer garden, and fireworks to close out the night.
Lower Reach Park, 11:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

🍁 Carleton Place – Celebrate along the Mississippi River with a full day of music, food, inflatables, crafts, FIFA World Cup activities, and a fireworks show. Enjoy NEW bicycle valet parking and free shuttle service all day.
Riverside Park, 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Fireworks at 9:45 p.m.

🍁 Lanark – A full day of community spirit: moose hunt, morning yoga, fire department demos, face painting, baseball, live music, Mrs. B’s Canteen, and fireworks at dusk.

Canadians could see extra cash hit their bank accounts as the government’s new grocery rebate top-up is expected to be deposited in June.

As the cost of groceries continues to rise across Canada, the government’s new grocery rebate is expected to help offset some of those expenses. In January, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) would replace the GST/HST credit in July 2026.

In April, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) stated that Canadians who meet the eligibility requirements will receive a one-time GST/HST credit top-up ahead of its transition into the new grocery rebate on Friday, June 5, 2026
