À l'horaire cette semaine au Cinéma du Parc 🎬

Dès vendredi, découvrez CALLE MÁLAGA de Maryam Touzani, la réalisatrice marocaine encensée pour LE BLEU DU CAFTAN et ADAM. Alors qu’elle a trouvé une stabilité émotionnelle à Tanger après la perte de son mari, une femme de 79 ans (interprétée par Carmen Maura, muse d'Almodóvar) est contrainte par sa fille à vendre son appartement, et à perdre tous ses repères.

Les projections psychanalytiques sont de retour mercredi avec AUTUMN SONATA d'Ingmar Bergman, un portrait intime et tendu d'une relation mère-fille dont les blessures sont exposées lors de retrouvailles après 7 ans. Le film sera suivi d’une discussion informelle mêlant cinéma et clinique en compagnie de Dr Elisabeth Banon, psychiatre à l'Université McGill.

La série des Nouveaux classiques de Minuit au Parc se poursuit avec 28 DAYS LATER de Danny Boyle en fin de semaine. Venez (re)découvrir ce film à l'avant-garde de l'engouement pour les zombies à l'écran du début des années 2010, où on voit d'ailleurs Cillian Murphy dans un de ses premiers rôles à l'écran.

This week at Cinéma du Parc 🎬

Starting Friday, discover CALLE MÁLAGA by Maryam Touzani, the Moroccan director acclaimed for The Blue Caftan and Adam. After finding emotional stability in Tangier following her husband’s death, a 79-year-old woman (played by Carmen Maura, Almodóvar’s muse) is forced by her daughter to sell her apartment, losing all her bearings in the process.

Psychoanalytic screenings return on Wednesday with Autumn Sonata by Ingmar Bergman, an intimate and tense portrait of a mother-daughter relationship whose wounds resurface during a reunion after seven years. The film will be followed by an informal discussion blending cinema and clinical insight with Dr. Elisabeth Banon, psychiatrist at McGill University.

The "Parc at Midnight: New Classics" series continues this weekend with 28 Days Later by Danny Boyle. Come (re)discover this groundbreaking film that helped spark the early 2010s zombie craze, featuring one of Cillian Murphy’s first screen roles.

AUTUMN SONATA se déploie comme une partition à quatre mains : celle d’une mère et de sa fille dont la rencontre fait affleurer les blessures anciennes qui ont façonné leur lien. La mère, Charlotte (Ingrid Bergman dans son dernier rôle à l'écran), est une brillante pianiste de renommée mondiale qui a priorisé ses ambitions professionnelles tout au long de sa vie, parfois au détriment de son rôle de mère. La fille, Eva (Liv Ullmann), mène une vie plus rangée, marquée de traumatismes (la noyade tragique d'un fils en bas âge) et d'abnégation (notamment à travers les soins prodigués à sa sœur gravement atteinte d’une maladie dégénérative).

La seule collaboration à l'écran entre les Bergman (Ingmar et Ingrid), AUTUMN SONATA agit comme un miroir sensible de nos propres héritages affectifs et de nos blessures filiales. Présenté dans le cadre des projections psychanalytiques, le film sera suivi d’une discussion informelle mêlant cinéma et clinique en compagnie de Dr Elisabeth Banon, psychiatre à l'Université McGill.

AUTUMN SONATA unfolds like a four-hand composition: that of a mother and her daughter, whose reunion brings long-buried wounds to the surface and reveals how they have shaped their relationship. The mother, Charlotte (Ingrid Bergman in her final screen role), is a celebrated, world-renowned pianist who has prioritized her professional ambitions throughout her life, at times at the expense of her role as a mother. The daughter, Eva (Liv Ullmann), leads a more restrained life, marked by trauma, including the tragic drowning of her young son, and by self-sacrifice, particularly in caring for her sister, who is severely disabled due to a degenerative illness.

The only on-screen collaboration between the Bergmans (Ingmar and Ingrid), AUTUMN SONATA serves as a sensitive mirror of our own emotional inheritances and filial wounds. Presented as part of the psychoanalytic screenings series, the film will be followed by an informal discussion bringing together cinematic and clinical perspectives, in the company of Dr. Elisabeth Banon, psychiatrist at McGill University.

"Autumn Sonata (1978) cuts deep into a woman, even if she recoils from it. We are all some mother’s daughter, whether we were cherished or abandoned, spoiled or abused. Both of the film’s stars, Liv Ullmann and Ingrid Bergman, had daughters as well as celebrated careers. But when Bergman left her husband for Roberto Rossellini, she went years without seeing her daughter from her first marriage. As for Ullmann, just the year before she had written, “Success in one’s profession and trying to write a book do not compensate for domestic shortcomings as obvious as mine.” She was referring to her relationship with her daughter, Linn, whose father was Ingmar Bergman. The director later said that when he conceived Autumn Sonata, he considered no other actresses for the two main roles. He didn’t say why, nor did he need to."

SEMAINE SOMBRE: la programmation complète est là! 🩶

Cette année, le festival initié par l'American cinematheque se tient dans 73 villes autour du monde, dont Buenos Aires, Londres, New York et, pour la première fois, Montréal. Du 5 au 11 juin, découvrez notre programmation de films qui explorent les aspects les plus sombres de l'humanité dans nos trois cinémas.

Parmi les films présentés, on retrouve le classique québécois LES BONS DÉBARRAS, de Francis Mankiewicz, gagnant de huit prix Génie en 1981, dont meilleur film, meilleur réalisateur et meilleur scénario original, le drame SANS TOIT NI LOI, de la réalisatrice culte Agnès Varda, le thriller psychologique FUNNY GAMES, du maître du désespoir Michael Haneke, et AFTERSUN, de Charlotte Wells, qui avait fait pleurer beaucoup de cinéphiles à sa sortie en 2022.

Le coup d'envoi de l'événement sera donné par le réalisateur et scénariste Denis Côté qui présentera le film de son choix, SOMBRE de Philippe Grandrieux.

BLEAK WEEK: the full program is here! 🩶

This year, the festival initiated by the American Cinematheque is taking place in 73 cities around the world, including Buenos Aires, London, New York and, for the first time, Montreal. From June 5 to 11, discover our lineup of films exploring the darkest aspects of humanity in our three cinemas.

Among the films presented are the Quebec classic LES BONS DÉBARRAS by Francis Mankiewicz, winner of eight Genie Awards in 1981, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay; the drama SANS TOIT NI LOI by cult filmmaker Agnès Varda; the psychological thriller FUNNY GAMES by master of despair Michael Haneke; and AFTERSUN by Charlotte Wells, which moved many cinephiles to tears upon its release in 2022.

The event will kick off with director and screenwriter Denis Côté, who will present his selected film, SOMBRE by Philippe Grandrieux.

Vous avez vu Hunger Games? C'est le moment de découvrir BATTLE ROYALE 💥

On inaugure le cycle «Nouveaux classiques» de Minuit au Parc avec ce film emblématique du réalisateur Kinji Fukasaku, d'abord connu pour ses films sur les yakuzas. Ce thriller dystopique (qui est par ailleurs son dernier film) a eu une influence et un rayonnement considérables; Quentin Tarantino a même affirmé qu'il aurait aimé l'avoir réalisé.

« Survival » le plus extrême qui soit parce qu'il met en scène des adolescents âgés de quinze à seize ans se retrouvant dans une arène mortelle, Battle Royale était une critique de l'état japonais, voire de tous les états usant d'un endoctrinement pour régir ses sujets. Les étudiants étaient de simples ados et ils devenaient des tueurs sans merci par la force des choses : s'ils ne tuent pas, les militaires surveillant l'opération activeront leurs colliers». We’re launching Parc at Midnight’s “New Classics” series with this iconic film by director Kinji Fukasaku, initially known for his yakuza movies. This dystopian thriller (which is also his final film) has had a considerable influence and impact; Quentin Tarantino even said he wished he had directed it.

‘’Battle Royale makes those that come after it look tame by comparison. The violence and gore are extraordinary. Blood spurts in vicious fountains. The deaths vacillate between uncomfortably funny and devastatingly maudlin. (...) Deux nouveautés s’invitent à l’affiche dès vendredi :
🌋 ERUPCJA, signé Pete Ohs, marque le premier rôle au cinéma de Charli XCX. Ce petit bijou découvert par notre équipe de programmation suit les retrouvailles de deux amies liées par une relation aussi intense qu’imprévisible… rythmée par d’étranges épisodes d’activité volcanique.
🗺 HÉRON BLEU (BLUE HERON) de Sophy Romvari fait son retour à l’écran après une projection spéciale lors de la Journée du cinéma canadien. La cinéaste sera d’ailleurs présente pour deux ciné-rencontres en fin de semaine : celle du samedi 2 mai sera animée en français par Eric K. Boulianne, et celle du dimanche 3 mai en anglais par Matthew Rankin.

Two new films hit the big screen this Friday:
🌋 ERUPCJA, directed by Pete Ohs, marks Charli XCX’s film debut. This gem, discovered by our programming team, follows the reunion of two friends bound by a relationship as intense as it is unpredictable… punctuated by strange episodes of volcanic activity.
🗺 BLUE HERON by Sophy Romvari returns to the screen following a special screening during Canadian Cinema Day. The filmmaker will also be present for two post-screening discussions this weekend: the one on Saturday, May 2, will be moderated in French by Eric K. Boulianne, and the one on Sunday, May 3, in English by Matthew Rankin.

Cult film fans will also be in for a treat this week:
🥀 THE ROOM returns to the big screen this Thursday at 9:30 p.m., as part of a screening organized by The Room MTL. A perfect opportunity to rediscover this one-of-a-kind classic!

La réalisatrice Sophy Romvari sera au cinéma du Parc les 2 et 3 mai pour deux ciné-rencontres autour de son premier long-métrage HÉRON BLEU. 🗺
Si vous n'aviez pas pu assister à la projection lors de la Journée du cinéma canadien, voici votre occasion de découvrir ce film d’une délicatesse extrême et d’une grande beauté.

Vancouver, 1990. Sasha, huit ans, grandit dans une famille d’origine hongroise aux côtés de ses deux jeunes frères et de Jeremy, son demi-frère aîné dont la chevelure dorée et les yeux clairs détonnent avec le reste du clan. Entre douceur, absences et colères imprévisibles, ce dernier marque profondément leur été. Dès vendredi, découvrez I SWEAR de Kirk Jones sur nos écrans, inspiré d'une histoire vraie. On y suit le parcours de John Davidson, un jeune homme vivant avec le syndrome de Gilles de la Tourette qui décide de mener un combat pour être reconnu tel qu’il est, au-delà des préjugés. Robert Aramayo, qui incarne ici le protagoniste, s'est d'ailleurs vu récompensé du BAFTA du Meilleur acteur dans un rôle principal pour sa performance dans ce film.

Le Festival du cinéma latino-américain se Montréal bat toujours son plein cette semaine! Découvrez la crème de la production cinématographique en provenance de l'Amérique latine jusqu'au 26 avril.

What’s new this week 👀

Starting Friday, discover I SWEAR by Kirk Jones on our screens, inspired by a true story. It follows the journey of John Davidson, a young man living with Tourette syndrome who decides to fight to be recognized as he is, beyond prejudice. Robert Aramayo, who plays the protagonist, was also awarded the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in this film.
