Der Rosenkavalier It starts off simply enough: Boy meets girl and falls head over heels. But in opera—as in life—the path to happily-ever-after can be a thorny one. A Viennese noblewoman relishes the affection of her young lover, Octavian, but quietly dreads the day his heart will find true love. And then, it happens: Octavian spies the lovely Sophie, and he’s forever changed. After learning she’s promised to an oafish old baron, Octavian hatches a hilarious plot to set her free, with the help of a surprising ally.

The Pirates of Penzance Gilbert and Sullivan as it’s meant to be – pure, uncomplicated fun, performed to the highest standards. A young man bound by an overactive sense of duty, a soft-hearted pirate king with a hopeless band of rogues at his side, a beautiful young girl, a very modern major-general and an ineffectual bevy of policemen…add a plot hinging on the technicalities of having a birthday on the 29th of February and we’re just about there. What could possibly go wrong? Gilbert’s high speed patter is razor sharp and Sullivan’s score sees him at the top of his game, with the catchy tunes for which he is so well known.

Hudson Film Society's OPERA & BEYOND begins a NEW SEASON October 13th with Rigoletto - Verdi's dark story of passion, vengeance, and murder in a sixteenth-century court is as heartbreaking as it is ironic. This captivating tale of a father's devotion, a daughter's innocence, and a duke's lechery is set to some of Verdi's most brilliant tunes. Rigoletto is a court jester who pokes fun at the pitfalls of the courtiers, all for the amusement of the Duke, a notorious womanizer. The joke's on Rigoletto, however, when it turns out that his daughter Gilda might be the Duke's next target. When the jester pits himself against his master in an effort to protect his daughter's virtue, he inadvertently destroys all that is dear to him.

La Traviata

La Traviata – Sunday, February 10 at 2.00 pm.

This opera was shown several season’s ago in a version from the Royal Opera House. This production is a very different look staged by another of the world’s great opera companies. La Traviata is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, based on La dame aux Camélias (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils. The title La Traviata means literally The Fallen Woman, or perhaps more figuratively, The Woman Who Goes Astray.

Aida - Sunday, November 18 at 2.00 pm.

First performed in Cairo, Egypt in 1871. It is a heart-rending tragic ancient-Egypt love triangle and it is Verdi’s most popular opera. Pure human passions and spectacle have made it, with over 1100 performances, one of the most popular operas in New York’s Metropolitan Opera history. Aida, an Ethiopian princess, is captured and brought into slavery in Egypt. A military commander, Radamès, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. To complicate the story further, Radamès is loved by the Pharaoh's daughter Amneris, although he does not return her feelings.

The creative force behind this ground-breaking initiative is Hudson Film Society President Clint Ward. “We are delighted to share the exciting news that the Hudson Film Society (HFS) will continue the popular winter Opera Series previously run by Village Theatre” says Ward. “There is definitely excitement in the air when we contemplate what this programming is actually bringing to our audiences. This season the former two week-end performance (Sat-Sun) schedule will be combined into a single 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon screening, and in addition to opera will include other forms of musical theatre such as operetta and Broadway shows – hence the title Opera and Beyond. All the seats in the theatre are excellent and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.”

Zachary Woolfe, author of The Screen Can’t Hear When You Yell Bravo, describes an HD performance he recently attended where he asked a woman to compare the live opera experience to HD: “There’s no substitute,” she said, sitting next to him. Then she looked at the screen. “Well,” she added, “this is a good substitute.” Mr. Woolfe continues “The HD program is revolutionary and is sure to lead to even more revolutionary ideas. It won’t be long before you’ll be able to stream the Met’s performances — any Met performance, live on your computer, smartphone or tablet. That is how the new audience for opera will be found, in a way simultaneously more artificial and more genuine than the seductive illusion of live performance in the HD series.”
