A fair in a small Dutch city is a window on the art world and collecting trends

IMPORTANT NOTICE > All players in the Belgian art market, including BRAFA, are concerned about the future of the cultural and art sector.

At issue is Belgium's transposition of the European Union's 'rates directive' 2022/542, which requires Member States to harmonise VAT rates and regimes from January 1st 2025. The consequences are, in particular, the partial abolition of the special profit margin regime to which the art market sector has been subject since 1996, but also the possible or partial application of a 21 % VAT rate in place of the current 6 % rate. This would have the effect of developing a more onerous system and market for galleries, artists and collectors, while creating an imbalance in relation to the systems and situations in neighbouring countries.

A petition, initiated by ROCAD.be (Royal Chamber of Art Dealers of Belgium), has been recently circulating and the BRAFA Art Fair has joined in the efforts to maintain a normal and workable regime for our entire market.
