Besides you want to make sure to skew your plane when planing knots to reduce the resistance. You should avoid fighting against knots. If you dare, your blade is highly likely to chip. And for the same reason of reducing resistance, you want to slice the stock as thin as possible. To achieve this the sole of your plane should be carefully conditioned.

How to tell the top and bottom of a timber?

In Japanese joinery, we make sure that timber boards are used as they occurred in nature as trees. For instance, while building a house, we always use the posts facing the right way up.

But how can you tell which end is the top and which is the bottom?
