What might a tree see in a hundred years?

People arrive. They fall in love. They study, struggle, discover, age, and disappear.
And the tree remains.

At the centre of 'Silent Friend' stands a majestic ginkgo tree in the botanical garden of a German university town, a silent witness to three human stories unfolding across more than a century.

In 1908, the university's first female student begins to discover the natural world through photography. In 1972, a young student finds himself transformed through his connection with a plant. And in 2020, a neuroscientist stranded during the pandemic begins an unusual experiment with the ancient tree.

Directed by IldikΓ³ Enyedi, 'Silent Friend' asks us to look at the world from a perspective very different from our own.

Everyone welcome β€” no need to be an MFS member.

THE GOOD BOY – THANK YOU FOR JOINING US!

Thank you to the 35 people who joined us at Wallis Cinemas for Tuesday night's screening of 'The Good Boy'.

There were some interesting conversations, and quite a few laughs, as people left the cinema. It seems the film had us contemplating some rather unconventional approaches to changing human behaviour!

But beneath the dark humour were some serious questions. What makes someone change? Is punishment effective? What role do care, connection, and belonging play? And just how far should someone go in trying to help another person?

'The Good Boy' certainly gave us plenty to think about, even if we wouldn't recommend adopting its methods!

⭐ STARBOX RESULTS

'The Good Boy' received 3.7 out of 5 stars from our MFS audience, with 34 of the 35 people attending casting a vote.

Opinions were certainly mixed, but 24 people awarded the film four or five stars. Another film that has given our members plenty to talk about!

🎟️ OUR FIRST MEMBERS' RAFFLE!

We also held our first MFS members' raffle! Congratulations to our lucky winner, who went home with a Wallis Cinema double pass.

Thank you to everyone who came along, including some new faces. It's always lovely to see our MFS community growing.

NEXT UP: 'SILENT FRIEND'

Tomorrow night at MFS: Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, and one very disturbing idea.

Nineteen-year-old Tommy wakes after a drug-fuelled night to discover that he has been kidnapped and chained in the basement of a family home.

His captor, Chris, doesn't want money.

He wants to make Tommy a better person.

What follows is part psychological thriller, part dark comedy and part examination of something much harder to answer: what happens when the desire to help someone becomes the belief that you have the right to control them?

The Good Boy is dark, provocative and uncomfortable β€” and we suspect there will be plenty to talk about on the way out of the cinema.

Everyone welcome β€” no need to be an MFS member.

Can you force somebody to become a better person?

That's the disturbing question sitting at the centre of The Good Boy.

Tommy is violent, arrogant and apparently unconcerned about the damage he causes. Chris believes discipline, education and enforced responsibility can change him.

But who gets to decide what rehabilitation looks like? When does intervention become abuse? And if Tommy does begin to change, does that make what was done to him acceptable?

Director Jan Komasa's psychological thriller has been compared with A Clockwork Orange, but it isn't interested in giving us an easy hero and villain. Instead, it puts two deeply troubling versions of behaviour in front of us and asks us to sit with the consequences.

Exactly the sort of film that gives us something to talk about afterwards.

If you watched Stephen Graham in Adolescence, you already know how much he can do without saying very much.

In The Good Boy, he gives us another complicated father, but a very different one.

Graham plays Chris, a seemingly respectable family man who abducts violent 19-year-old Tommy and chains him in the basement of his family home. Chris doesn't see himself as a monster. He believes he is trying to save Tommy.

And that is where things become much more uncomfortable.

Alongside Andrea Riseborough as Chris's wife Kathryn and Anson Boon as Tommy, Graham takes us into territory where the lines between care and control, rehabilitation and punishment, become increasingly difficult to draw.

This is not a comfortable film, nor is it meant to be.
