Getting a film onto the big screen takes more than finishing it. Distributors look for its audience, cinemas weigh up their available screens, and both consider whether enough people will come along.

In 2010, 3,500 strangers arrived at London’s Alexandra Palace dressed as Bedouins to watch Lawrence of Arabia.

But they did not simply sit down and watch a film.

They entered its world.

As Maurice Jarre’s score filled the enormous hall and Peter O’Toole crossed the desert, thousands of people experienced the same story together. That was the idea behind Secret Cinema. When people participate in a story together, the emotion becomes stronger and the audience becomes connected. We believe stories were never meant simply to be consumed. They can bring people together, begin conversations and become shared memories. That belief is at the heart of something new we have been creating behind the scenes.

What began as a simple Earth Day idea became the Bike Bus: a joyful weekly tradition filled with music, movement and community.

Long before the lights dim, distributors and cinema bookers are working behind the scenes assessing local audiences, competing releases, available screens and the potential of each film.

Even after opening weekend, audience demand can change everything. Strong ticket sales may earn a film more sessions, more screens or a longer theatrical run.

Making the film is only the beginning. Getting it in front of an audience is the next chapter.

As new technology becomes part of the filmmaking process, the most important skills may become even more human.

Story. Character. Direction. Taste. Emotion.
