The 21st Latin American Film Festival concluded last night and we'll be back to full programming next week, but for this week enjoy the first big-screen Star Wars adventure in seven years (The MANDALORIAN AND GROGU), Andy Serkis's computer-animated take on George Orwell's seminal masterpiece (ANIMAL FARM) and Brian Cox directing and starring alongside Alan Cu***ng in a whiskey-fuelled tale of family dysfunction (GLENROTHAN).

• FRI 28 AUG @ 7:30 PM: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU

In the aftermath of the defeat of the evil Galactic Empire, a legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu are enlisted by the New Republic to rescue the son of an alien crime lord from captivity. (M, 132 mins)

• SAT 29 AUG @ 5 PM: ANIMAL FARM

Dreaming of equality and freedom, a group of farm animals rise up against their neglectful human owner only to find their revolution descending into tyranny as the pigs gain control in this animated adaptation of George Orwell's novel. (PG, 96 mins)

• SAT 29 AUG @ 7:30 PM: GLENROTHAN

Returning to his family's whiskey distillery in the Scottish Highlands, Donal (Alan Cu***ng) attempts to make amends with his estranged brother (Brian Cox) while confronting their past and the true reasons for his departure 35 years ago. (M, 97 mins)

A cross-cultural Australian comedy (HOW TO TALK AUSTRALIANS), an acclaimed, decades-spanning German drama (SOUND OF FALLING) and a throwback heist thriller (TUNER) round out our offerings between Thursday and Saturday this week at the ANU Film Group.

Please note that the Latin American Film Festival will be taking over this Saturday's 5 pm screening slot, with TUNER screening at 7:30 pm.

• THU 20 AUG @ 7:30 PM: HOW TO TALK AUSTRALIANS

When a storm diverts their plane to the country town of Dubbo, a group of hapless Indian students and teachers from The Delhi College of Linguistics get the opportunity to discover Australia's 'real' language and culture firsthand. (M, 90 mins)

• FRI 21 AUG @ 7:30 PM: SOUND OF FALLING

Over the course of a century, four generations of adolescent girls spend their youth in a remote German farmhouse. Though separated by decades, their lives are united by their shared desires, trauma and secrets behind the walls. (MA, 149 mins)

• SAT 22 AUG @ 7:30 PM: TUNER

A piano tuner (Leo Woodall) with a heightened sensitivity to sound discovers an unexpected aptitude for cracking safes and becomes embroiled in criminal activities in order to pay off his mentor's (Dustin Hoffman) debts. (MA, 108 mins)

Set sail for Christopher Nolan's THE ODYSSEY this week at the ANU Film Group! It's a film so big we're screening it twice: once on Friday for members and invited guests, and once again with a free screening as part of ANU Community Day on Saturday at the special start time of 4 pm. Plus, an award-winning German drama (SILENT FRIEND) starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Léa Seydoux.

• FRI 14 AUG @ 7:30 PM: THE ODYSSEY

After ten years of war, Odysseus (Matt Damon) is eager to return to his family but must first survive the long and perilous voyage home as he is forced to confront both vengeful gods and deadly monsters in Christopher Nolan's fantasy epic. (M, 172 mins)

In a German botanical garden, a majestic gingko tree bears witness to over a century of change through the lives of three people – each carrying their own questions and struggles – who find themselves drawn to the mysterious tree. (M, 147 mins)

The annual celebration of Latin American cinema, culture and community returns this week for its 21st year!

The 2026 Latin American Film Festival kicks off tonight with host country Argentina's selection: a 25th anniversary screening of the Oscar-nominated 2001 comedy-drama, SON OF THE BRIDE. Ageing outlaws, mentally unstable cabbies, amateur stuntmen, struggling writers and troubled artists can all be found at the ANU Film Group this week – definitely on-screen, possibly off-screen! – as we enter the second week of our blossoming Spring season and dive into the month of August.

• TUE 4 AUG @ 7:30 PM: FRANZ: BECOMING KAFKA

This surreal portrait of Franz Kafka chronicles the people, places and experiences that shaped one of literature's most influential and elusive figures during his decades-long struggle to reconcile his creative urges with an ordinary life. (MA, 128 mins)

• THU 6 AUG @ 7:30 PM: JACKASS: BEST AND LAST

Johnny Knoxville and his ragtag crew of would-be stuntmen set out to inflict pain upon each other one last time, while also reminiscing on their favourite skits from the past 25 years, in this fifth and final film in the comedy series. (MA, 92 mins)

An insomniac war veteran (Robert De Niro) takes on a job as a New York cabbie, only to find his mental state deteriorating as he experiences the city's seedy underbelly firsthand in this 50th anniversary screening of the iconic thriller. (R, 114 mins)

Amidst the frenzy of Paris Fashion Week, an American filmmaker (Angelina Jolie) receives a devastating diagnosis but finds unexpected solidarity with a young South Sudanese model and a French makeup artist dreaming of a different life. (M, 104 mins)

This Saturday, the ANU Film Group will be celebrating the life and legacy of the late, great Sam Neill at our screening of HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE at 7:30 pm.

Spring may be a few weeks away yet, but we're getting a jump on it at the ANU Film Group this week with our new Spring programme beginning Wednesday!

And if that isn't reason enough to celebrate, we're also marking the occasion with a FREE screening of horror sensation OBSESSION on Friday 31 July at 7:30 pm, courtesy of our friends at ANUSA. Doors will open at 7 pm for entry, with entry on a first in, best dressed basis.

Harbouring unrequited feelings for his friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette), a lovesick music store employee (Michael Johnston) makes a wish on a mysterious trinket but soon gets exactly what he asked for – with horrific consequences. (MA, 108 mins)

At long last, here is the ANU Film Group's new Spring 2026 programme!

The good news is that you won't have to wait long for screenings to begin as we kick things off next Wednesday with a stellar line-up including a free screening of the horror sensation OBSESSION alongside SUPERGIRL, BACKROOMS, MINIONS & MONSTERS and HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE as a tribute to the late, great Sam Neill.

You'll also find two film festivals as part of this new season: the return of the Latin American Film Festival for its 21st year in August and a three-night celebration of Asia and the Pacific with the Immersia Film Festival in September. Entry into all of these films will be completely free!

And on Saturday 15 August, we'll even be joining the festivities as the ANU celebrates its 80th anniversary with an ANU Community Day by hosting a free screening of Christopher Nolan's THE ODYSSEY. (Don't worry, we've got another screening the night before on Friday 14 August for members and guests.)

The ANU and the Embassy of Argentina are hosting a screening of the sure-to-be-thrilling match on the BIG screen in the Kambri Cinema. The festivities will start bright and early on Monday 20 July with kick off at 5 am.
