Since 1966, the ANU Film Group has offered the full cinema experience at a fraction of the cost! And best of all membership is open to anyone!

The ANU Film Group is Australia's largest film society, screening over 150 movies each year, ranging from the most recent Hollywood hits, to foreign and independent films not seen elsewhere, along with classic films not seen on the big screen in years.

We're just over a week away from the start of our new Summer 2026/27 season and are thrilled to announce that director Jennifer Peedom's acclaimed new film TENZING will be the opening film of our new programme on Thursday 22 October!

Based on the incredible yet little-known true story, the film follows Himalayan climber Tenzing Norgay (Genden Phuntsok) and New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston) as they attempt to become the first to summit the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, in 1953. TENZING is Canberra-born director Peedom's first narrative feature film after a string of award-winning documentaries including SHERPA, MOUNTAIN and RIVER.

We are in the process of getting the new programme uploaded to our website, but in the meantime, here's what else you can look forward to in the first two weeks of the new season:

Our Spring 2026 season ends this week with a bonanza of films you simply have to see to believe!

From Matthew McConaughey facing off against beekeeping gangs (THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING) to Olivia Wilde as a B**M dominant artist boss (I WANT YOUR S*X), a Swiss road trip under false pretences (BON VOYAGE, MARIE) and travelling through time to 19th century France (COLOURS OF TIME). Plus, just in time for Halloween, the scariest adventures of everyone's favourite claymation sheep (SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM).

An 80-year-old woman embarks on an unexpected road trip to Switzerland to collect a mysterious inheritance, accompanied by her unreliable son, teenage granddaughter and a reluctant caregiver in this poignant French comedy-drama. (M, 97 mins)

Young Elliot (Cooper Hoffman) can't believe his luck when he's hired as an assistant to a successful, provocative artist (Olivia Wilde), but soon finds himself in over his head when she begins grooming him to be her submissive s*xual muse (MA, 90 mins)

A charismatic and musically-gifted apiarist (Matthew McConaughey) runs the top honey-making operation in his rural Oklahoma town – but his life is upended by the return of his foster daughter and ruthless beekeeping rivals. (M, 131 mins)

It's the penultimate week of our current Spring season and we're wrapping things up with an acclaimed German WWII historical drama (AMRUM), a scandalous French comedy-drama based on a true story (THE RICHEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD), while Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reunite for the long-awaited sequel to a cult classic (PRACTICAL MAGIC 2). Plus, a special 100th anniversary screening of Buster Keaton's silent classic, THE GENERAL, fully restored and with a new musical score.

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy living on the remote island of Amrum finds his peaceful existence unravelling when WWII ends and his mother – a fervent N**i loyalist – sinks into depression, forcing him to fend for himself in a brave new world. (M, 94 mins)

During the American Civil War, an engineer (Buster Keaton) must do everything in his power to recover his beloved locomotive engine when it is stolen by Union soldiers, in this 100th anniversary screening of the landmark silent comedy. (G, 79 mins)

• THU 8 OCT @ 7:30 PM: THE RICHEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD

When an ageing billionaire heiress (Isabelle Huppert) decides to gift her entire fortune to a young gay photographer, a scandalous power struggle ensues as her family fight to retain their fortune in this French drama based on a true story. (M, 123 mins)

• FRI 9 OCT @ 7:30 PM: PRACTICAL MAGIC 2

When a discovery about the secret origins of their family's magic comes to light, the Owens sisters (Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman) must once again unite in an attempt to break a dark curse that has haunted their lineage for centuries. (M, 130 mins)

Now in its fourth year, the ANU School of Culture, History & Language's flagship Immersia festival showcases the cultures, traditions and languages of Asia and the Pacific. From language and literature to food, film, music and martial traditions, Immersia transforms the entire campus over two weeks into a cultural hot spot, hub of activity and meeting place.

And the ANU Film Group are getting in on the action this year too by co-hosting three FREE film screenings for our members and the general public:

• THU 17 SEP @ 7:30 PM: IRON WINTER – A stunning look at an ancient nomadic way of life as two friends take on a sacred responsibility to herd 2,000 horses during one of Mongolia's coldest winters on record.

• FRI 18 SEP, 7:30 PM: FIRST LIGHT – A middle-aged nun working at a remote hospital in the Phillipines uncovers dark secrets in Australia's official submission for Best International Film at next year's Oscars.

• SAT 19 SEP, 4 PM: SALT BRIDGE – Shot in Canberra, this special event screening of Australia's first Hindi-language film will begin at 4 pm with a panel discussion featuring writer-director Abhijit Deonath and other special guests, followed by the film at 5 pm.

Canberra Q***r Film Festival - CQFF will be taking place next week over two days on Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 September.

The festival celebrates colourful and diverse stories written by and for the LGBTIQA+ community and allies around the world with 3 feature films and 14 short films, many of which will be screening for the first time in Australia.

Plus, Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Edward Norton and Penelope Cruz play married couples exploring unexpected territory in THE INVITE, a wealthy heiress attempts to stage a landmark concert in the French musical comedy THE MUSICIANS, and Australian genre punches above its weight again in the acclaimed, queer-themed psychological thriller LEVITICUS.

Winter has come and gone and Spring has officially sprung!

We kick off the month of September with five very different films, from an Aussie indie (ALPHABET LANE) to a French murder mystery (A PRIVATE LIFE) and a 25th anniversary screening of a Studio Ghibli masterpiece (SPIRITED AWAY). And if you're into horror films, look no further than the rise of Putin, as played by Jude Law (who else?) in THE WIZARD OF THE KRELIMN along with the latest entry in the gory, squirm-inducing EVIL DEAD series.

After moving to the country, a young couple attempt to cure their loneliness by inventing new neighbours – until letters begin to arrive from their fabricated friends, blurring the line between reality and delusion in this Australian thriller. (M, 80 mins)

• THU 3 SEP @ 7:30 PM: A PRIVATE LIFE

In Paris, a struggling American psychiatrist (Jodie Foster) tries her hand at amateur sleuthing as she sets out to investigate the suspicious death of one of her patients with the help of her ex-husband in this French-language mystery. (M, 103 mins)
