Cate Blanchett discusses Electra/Persona, Benedict Andrews' drama based on Bergman and Sophocles. The film first merges the two, and then elevates the concept by featuring star actresses like Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss as Electra and her murderous mother, Clytemnestra, as well as Bergman's inexplicably silent actress Elisabeth and her nurse, Alma, who develop a disturbing parallel relationship.

The part of the title that refers to Electra alludes to Sophocles' tragedy of a daughter trapped in a cycle of revenge, and the part that refers to Persona refers to the 1966 film. Persona (1966) is a masterpiece of psychological cinema directed, written, and produced by the Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman and starring Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson. Electra-Persona is playing at the Lyttelton Theatre and will run until October 10, 2026.

How did playing Elizabeth impact Cate Blanchett's career?

In 1998, Cate Blanchett played Elizabeth I of England, directed by Shekhar Kapur.

That role catapulted her into the global spotlight of cinema, and the challenge for her was discovering what she could bring to the role, which had already been played by actresses such as Sarah Bernhardt (1912), Flora Robson (1937), Bette Davis (1939 and 1955), Glenda Jackson (1972), and even Judi Dench, who played Elizabeth the same year as Cate but in the film Shakespeare in Love.
