Bangalow Film Festival

Bangalow Film Festival Sixth Bangalow Film Festival, 11-21 June 2026

28/05/2026

A neuroscientist. A photography student. A young woman discovering the hidden patterns of the universe through plants.

And quietly watching over all of them, a centuries-old ginkgo tree.

The extraordinary new film from acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker unfolds across three interconnected timelines, drifting between science, memory, nature and human connection with a kind of dreamlike logic that’s hard to shake afterwards.

Winner of six awards at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, Silent Friend feels deeply intimate and strangely cosmic all at once. One of those films that completely slows your nervous system down.

In 1973, twelve men climbed aboard handmade rafts in Ecuador and attempted something that genuinely feels impossible: crossing the Pacific Ocean guided only by the sun and stars on a 3 log raft.

What starts as a wild adventure slowly becomes something much stranger and more human as food dwindles, tensions rise and the vastness of the ocean starts swallowing everything whole.

Built from original 16mm expedition footage, ’s The Raftsmen feels raw, hypnotic and unlike any documentary we’ve seen in a long time.

Even more incredibly, the last surviving raft from the expedition now lives right here in the Northern Rivers at Ballina Maritime Museum , who’ll also be joining us on the night to share more about the raft and its history.

The film recently won Best Australian Documentary at Sydney Film Festival!!

We’ll be joined by filmmaker for a live Q&A afterwards. We’re so excited for this one!

Looking back through these photos from previous Bangalow Film Festival years honestly just made us very excited for June.

Packed hall, conversations spilling out onto the street after screenings, live music, Q&As, old friends, new friends and so many special moments shared together in little Bangalow.

This year’s program is full of incredible films, beautiful events and stories from all over the world and we genuinely can’t wait to welcome everyone back again.

Making this reminded me what incredible films we’re showing this year (if we do say so ourselves). So many beautiful stories, fascinating people, live music and special moments tucked into one tiny little festival.

YANUNI is a very rare film, and we feel incredibly lucky to be screening it at Bangalow Film Festival this year.

Directed by and produced by , follows Indigenous chief through the Brazilian Amazon as she fights to protect her people, her land and the future of the rainforest itself.

Political thriller, intimate portrait, environmental warning siren all tangled together into one breathtaking film. One minute you’re witnessing armed raids on illegal mining camps deep in the Amazon, the next you’re sitting quietly beside Juma as she navigates motherhood, danger, exhaustion and extraordinary responsibility.

It’s visually stunning, deeply human and genuinely urgent. Few films land with this much force.
