For our last film of 2025, on Friday 12 December, we're screening The Holdovers (2023). This American Christmas comedy, set in 1970, tells the story of a strict classics teacher at a New England boarding school who is forced to chaperone a handful of students who have nowhere to go during the school’s Christmas holiday break, and ends up forming an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker. Directed by Alexander Payne (About Schmidt, Sideways, The Descendants), it received 5 Oscar nominations and won an Oscar and a BAFTA. [133 mins, 15 certificate].

A bit of trivia about the film:

The entire film was shot in real, practical locations. No sets or soundstages were used. Many of the scenes were filmed at Fairhaven High School in Fairhaven, Massachusetts in February 2022 during the school's February break. At this time, the area received a snow storm to the delight of the film crew since many of the scenes took place during a snowstorm. They took full advantage of the weather and the snow you see in the film was from an actual snowstorm.

Doors will open at 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm start.

On his own in a strange new country, László settles in Pennsylvania, where the wealthy and prominent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren recognizes his talent for building. But power and legacy come at a heavy cost....
