Alternative Independent Cinema that existed in the 70s and 80s, closing in 1991 - sadly demolished mid 90s as part of Manchester's regeneration of Hulme.

This page is to remember the AABEN and used to go. Built as York Cinema, then Unit 4, then the AABEN. In memory of that great indie cinema in Hulme. The Scala of the North and open to films from all over the world. Known as the AABEN Circa 1973 - 1991. (formally Unit 4 Cinema, and formally the York Cinema). Jackson Crescent Hulme. Join this group if you're one of the many people who remember this fine independent and now legendary cinema and post your memories, pictures etc.

This famous shot of the front of the cinema when it was The York can be seen in the film The White Bus as the girl in the film (Patricia Healey) walks past the front of the cinema - one of the few shots in colour in the film in typical Lindsay Anderson style, the girl walks a few frames in colour. (Film also known as Red White Zero).
