I’m a huge fan of gratitude.

Getting into that mindset can do amazing things for you.

And it feels good too.

And also, sometimes, f**k gratitude.

Gratitude is one of those things that tends to get weaponized.

How many times has someone said to you something like
“You should be grateful…”
“Other people have it worse…”
“It could be worse…”

Those things might be true. But when they are used to essentially tell someone to shut up when they bring up something that is bothering them is toxic AF.

Weaponized gratitude can f**k all the way off.

True gratitude can coexist with the hard things.

Weaponized gratitude can’t.

When someone comes to me and tells me they f**ked up, I can work with that.

We can maybe fix it.

If they can’t even acknowledge their mistakes much less own them, there’s nowhere to go from there.

It’s a dead end.

At my grandpa’s birthday party, I overhear his tenant asking my 14 year old cousin does she like drawing, scrolling on Facebook, what does she like to do?

My grandma says something, but I can’t hear what she says.

But I hear that man’s tone change.

I hear barely restrained anger and aggression.

I hear him tell my grandma that he wasn’t talking to her. He was talking to [my cousin]. And he continues to ask my cousin about her social media.

It made my scalp prickle.

Because for one thing if someone had spoken to me like that in my house I’d have tossed them out.

And, most importantly, no 50 y/o man needs to be having a 1:1 conversation with a 14 y/o girl like that. And it certainly isn’t any f**king business of his what her social media is.

I’m waiting for the adults at the table to do something.

Until I realize it’s me. I’m an adult too. I’m the one that needs to do something.

There are people that will never see much less admit that how they did you was wrong.

So don’t wait for it.

Grieve what should have been and then move on.

I once listened to a podcast where Aprielle. Franks talked about going through teenage pregnancy, domestic violence, bankruptcy, and homelessness in her life.

She is now a multi-millionaire.

I had never considered before that that level of success could be possible for someone with abuse in their past.

Listening to her proved me wrong.

It made me think that I could be successful too.

I now consider it my sacred duty to be as successful as I possibly can and to do it very visibly.

So every abused woman can look at me and know that they can live a great life after abuse.

It takes a lot of work to manage your mind.

But it doesn’t take as much energy as believing ugly things about yourself.

Negativity is draining.

A managed mind will feel lighter even though you are putting in more effort.

Am I the problem? Am I the toxic one?

If you’re asking this, probably not.

We all act like as****es sometimes. It’s part of the human experience.

But what is problematic is when you refuse or avoid taking responsibility for your feelings or actions.

If you are actively cultivating self-awareness and improving any toxic behavior, then, no, you are not the problem.
