She Was Standing on the Dune at 2:47 AM. She Shouldn't Have Been There.
My cousin drives a truck between Touggourt and Hassi Messaoud. He told me never to stop in the desert after midnight. Last week, I didn't listen.
It was 2:47 AM. The moon was full, too bright. I saw her on top of the highest dune - a woman in a white dress, hair blowing, but there was NO wind.
I slowed down. She wasn't leaving footprints.
I thought she was lost. I rolled down my window and shouted in Arabic: "Ya okhti, do you need help?"
She turned. And she smiled. But her face... her face was looking the wrong way. Like an owl.
She started walking down the dune toward me. Not on the sand. ABOVE it. About 10 centimeters above.
I hit the gas. In my rearview mirror, she was still there. Closer. Much closer.
My cousin told me later: In our region, we call her "Moulat El Raml" - The Lady of the Sand. She appears to lonely drivers. If you stop, you disappear. The desert takes you. No body. No tracks. Just an empty truck with the engine still running.
Last night, my truck wouldn't start. And I found fine white sand... inside my sealed water bottle.
Have you ever seen something in the desert that you can't explain? Tell me in the comments. I read every single one.
Follow for a new true story every night at 9PM EST. You won't sleep tonight.
