MUSICAL MATINEES: Join West Newton Cinema for a new line-up of stellar, beloved musical matinees! Here, you'll find everything from beloved classics to jazz, from vaudeville to psychedelic rock, brought to you by the imaginative skill of artists able to make scenes look the way great music feels. 

On Saturday, August 29 at 1:00 PM, we begin with Band Wagon: Tony Hunter (Fred Astaire) is a has-been movie star. His only chance at a comeback is in a new Broadway show written by his friends Lester (Oscar Levant) and Lily (Nanette Fabray)—but the director, Jeffrey Cordova (Jack Buchanon), seems dead set on making the show as odd as possible, casting Tony opposite prima ballerina, Gabrielle Gerard (Cyd Charisse). An entertaining classic from director Vincent Minnelli, musical maverick!

Or you’ve seen it 20 times already but can’t get enough of Agnes Moorehead packing every possible human emotion into the single word “Charles”? Or you’ll willingly sit through the whole thing again just for Mr. Bernstein’s monologue about the girl on the pier? Maybe you just think Marion Davies got a raw deal.

TY BURR'S MOVIE CLUB: Join us on Thursday, July 9th at 6:30 PM for a special screening of THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE, the undersung Boston crime classic! Arrive on time to see Ty Burr introduce the film and stay afterwards for a discussion between Ty and the Boston Globe's Chris Vognar.

Before The Departed, The Town, or The Boondock Saints, there was The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Inspired by the real-life Walter Hill Gang, this gritty film pits a grisled Robert Michum against the Irish Mob, all against the backdrop of real Boston locations (including a Bruins game!).

Come for the twists and turns of mob life, stay for Mitchum's irreplaceable performance as a weary gunrunner trying to maneuver his way through a Boston that truly takes no prisoners.

🎬 You can shape the final cut of the documentary Nine. Join filmmakers Rachael DeCruz and Jeremy S. Levine for an exclusive work-in-progress screening this Wednesday, June 17, at 6:30 PM.

After being sentenced to life at 18, Gerald ("Nine") organized his way out of prison using the lessons taught by his incarcerated mentor, Henry. Now, Gerald is on a mission to bring his 83-year-old "Pops" home while there is still time. This poetic film is a necessary portrait of Black life in the American Northwest and a powerful exploration of love as resistance.

The film is currently at the crucial rough-cut stage, and your audience feedback will directly inform the final edit. Every single ticket purchase and donation goes directly toward completing this vital project.

🎬 Join us on Sunday, May 31 at 1:00 PM for a special screening of the critically acclaimed film SHTTL. And following the film, lead actor Moshe Lobel will join us in person for a live Q&A session!

Filmed entirely in one continuous shot, SHTTL captures the lives, loves, and inner conflicts within a Yiddish-speaking village in West Ukraine. The story unfolds in June 1941, precisely one day before the N**i invasion of the Soviet Union. The drama follows a young, aspiring filmmaker who returns from Kyiv to his rural village, planning to run away with his true love who is already engaged to another man.

This powerful film offers a look at a Jewish village just before it disappeared. The production features a full-scale replica of a traditional shtetl—including a hand-painted wooden synagogue—built in Ukraine just months before Russia invaded Kyiv.

⭐️ Moshe Lobel is a native Yiddish speaker from Brooklyn whose impressive credits include Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, HBO’s High Maintenance, Blumhouse’s The Vigil, and Netflix’s Unorthodox.

We’re honored to share that the West Newton Cinema Foundation has been awarded a $200,000 Capital Grant through the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund; an investment in preserving and strengthening community cinema for generations to come.
