French new wave director Jacques Rivette dies at 87 | Sight & Sound

Farewell to one of the greats of the French New wave, Jacques Rivette.

Our recommendation to watch is 'Celine and Julie go boating' and extraordinary example of how cinema can be anything and take you anywhere.

The news that Jacques Rivette has died at the age of 87 comes just as his most notorious work, the 13½-hour epic Out 1 (shot in 1970 but not formally completed until 1990), has just become widely available...

I don't want suspense, I want terror. I don't want humor, I want hysteria" - Renny Harlin (Dir. Of the masterwork 'Cliffhanger')

Eraserhead (1977).' And it is Eraserhead these UCLA students, in what Lim calls 'the moment of Lynch’s first brush with cult fame,' want to know about, putting a variety of questions to the young filmmaker, and putting his ability to answer them concretely to the test.

One of the last things we screened at JC before the end - read Elric get the scoop on why one of the wildest films of the 80's has taken so long to be rediscovered. #Society

As a video store kid of the 80’s, I was always on the hunt for something that would blow my mind and shock my friends. This wasn’t that hard to do in the golden VHS era of the fantastic but at a certain point it felt like I’d seen it all. That was until I […]

So here's the schedule for the last two days: Sat we are open our normal hours for biz 9-6pm and then we will stay open for friends to "hang out" after 6 until late.

Sunday will be just normal 10-4pm biz hours as there's a lot of packing up to do after.

We hope to see you for a last hurrah / Hot Chicken.

Last Day's of the Jumpcut...

It’s with great sadness that we have to say goodbye to JUMPCUT as it shuts it’s doors this Sunday (Yes, in three days). While the news will shock many and seem out of the blue behind the scenes it has been inevitable for some time and we were forced to very suddenly make this decision to close.

When we started out three years ago, is was just a whacky idea to fuse everything we loved about independent cinema and a coffee shop, we had no idea that it would be a smashing success socially and create the Cinefile haunt that it did. Sadly the restaurant side is unforgiving and one of the most difficult business models to survive. While we may have failed the restaurant biz we are proud of all the filmmakers and passionate creative people we connected and provided a home away from home.

We need to personally thank some of the key people who have helped us stick around as long as we have - most importantly our incredible staff Charlie Tarabour, John Humphrey, Kyle Kuchta, Carla Williams and the man who made the magic (Mayo) himself Mario. Without them this would have ended a year ago. They really are family and we would do anything for them. Thanks guys.

Also want to thank those key people who held events here over the years and helped make this little hole in the wall the mad fire hazard that it was - Rebekah McKendry & Ryan Turek of our most popular event ‘Dead Right Horror Trivia’, Mike Williamson and his generous film print collection of ‘Secret Sixteen’ (Who can forget ‘The Attic’ screening!), Dick Grunert a wonderfully loyal supporter and creator of ‘Spec Reads Live’, Michael Mattera of The Comedy Open Mic, Devin Faraci of Bad Ass Digest trivia, Brian Collins and his esoteric ‘Community’ trivia, Jose Prendes and his ‘Strictly Splatter’ screenings, Emma Julia Jacobs for being our #1 regular and best hugger and all of those short filmmakers who let me share their work over the years - I truly thank you for being part of this incredibly bumpy but wonderful ride. Our hope is to try and find new homes for some of these events so they can continue long after we close.

Most importantly, as hard as it is to say goodbye we want to remember the magic of it all and not dwell on the shortcomings. Please take a moment to write below your favorite Jumpcut moment or memory. It would mean the world to us to hear these stories. Because in the end that’s all we really take with us.

We will be here until Sunday and stay open late on Saturday to catch up, say goodbye and share a drink or a Hot Chicken Sandwich (The Hitch!). Without all of your support we wouldn’t have made it past the first month so here’s to you.

Much Love,

The Kanes
