Mastering the Wave: The Glass Engineering Behind Hamburg’s New Cultural LandmarkDesigned by Herzog & de Meuron, the striking glass corpus of the Elbphilharmonie stands as a modern architectural icon, seamlessly grafted atop the brick-lined foundations of the historic 1963 Kaiserspeicher warehouse. The structure’s undulating silhouette mimics the movement of sails, water waves, and icebergs, a feat made possible by a brilliant, unified plaza that connects the two distinct volumes. For architects, structural engineers, and glaziers, this facade serves as a masterclass in custom structural glazing and high-level climate management.The facade is a complex assembly of flat and custom-curved insulating glass units (IGUs) for the primary window systems, alongside triple-laminated curved single glazing used to construct the loggias. To ensure maximum efficiency without sacrificing transparency, the glazing utilizes a highly targeted sequence of low-E coatings, solar control barriers, chrome mirror dots, and ceramic screen-printed patterns. This precise configuration allows 47% visible light transmission to illuminate the interior spaces while driving down total energy transmittance to an impressive 36%—significantly cutting thermal stress and the building’s overall mechanical cooling load.
