Three Ways That Technology Has Influenced Music

Technology is a huge influence on music. From how we listen to it, to how it's sold, to the newest trends, there have been many changes over the past two decades. Most of these changes are a direct result of technological advances. If you aren't convinced that technology has greatly influenced music, see if you don't change your mind after reading this article.
How We Listen To Music
Think back to the year 1995. Cassette tapes and radio stations we're the main ways that people listened to their favorite music. Now think back to the year 2005. People were listening to music on CD's and downloading songs online was the newest technological craze. Today, both cassette tapes and CD's are virtually obsolete and digital downloads are taking over the way we listen to our favorite songs. Each of these trends was possible because of new technology.
How Music Is Sold
Similar to how we listen to music these days, the way it is sold has changed drastically as technology has progressed. The days of physically buying music are coming to an end and the virtual world is taking over. Digital companies like iTunes and Spotify account for the majority of music sales.
How Trends In Music Are Born
Music genres are constantly changing. What was hot last year is considered yesterday's news today. While music has always been evolving, this process tends to happen much faster since technology has become a more prominent part of daily life. Because of technology, new music is delivered to us much faster than it was twenty years ago. The faster music is heard, the sooner is becomes obsolete.

Social networking has changed the way we communicate and interact with those around us. Facebook hit the magic number of one billion users last year, and twitter currently has 645 million active users, according to recent statistics. Instagram and LinkedIn are also gaining new users each and everyday. These applications allow us to connect with our friends, family and coworkers, but hiring managers are also using social media feeds to w**d out potentially troubling candidates, and using it to find hidden rockstars in the bunch.

According to a survey conducted by CareerBuilder, 37% of hiring managers peeked in at the social media feeds of job candidates. Half of the respondents that admitted to using social media feeds to w**d out clients said that information they obtained on social networking helped them w**d out prospective employees that didn't fit well with the company. 34% of those respondents admitting to finding inappropriate pictures, and 30% admitted to finding inappropriate status updates and comments about past employers.

While many employers managed to w**d out employees through social networking feeds, some of those very employers also used feeds to find rock star candidates. Several companies admitted that they were compelled to hire employees after w**ding through social media feeds. Many admitted that the content they found helped them decide whether an employee was a good fit with their company, and 80% of respondents that used social media feeds used them to verify qualifications and educational information.

When you are typing away on your iPhone, or using Twitter to connect with friends and brands you love, just keep in mind that a potential employer may be looking at it in the future. Social media is a powerful thing. It can get you the job of your dreams, or it can directly effect your ability to find the job of your dreams, too.

The Easy Guide to Facebook Privacy in 3 Steps

Let's get this out of the way. If you want true privacy, don't use Facebook. But if you are like the billions of other people in the world, you have made the tradeoff that is online social interaction and your private life. Which there is nothing wrong with.
But in light of the ever-changing and rotating Facebook privacy rules, it's good to know what you can do to protect yourself, if at least for the near future (or until they change the tools and rules again).

Who's Using Your Technology to Spy on You?

Through connected or built-in cameras and microphones, your desktops, laptops, and tablets let you interact face-to-face with anyone on the Internet. This convenience does come with a price. The advanced technology makes it just as easy for someone to look at and listen to you without your knowledge.
Hackers consider it a sign of achievement to be able to look through your cameras and eavesdrop through your microphones. They boast about it to their buddies and post their spy sessions online. Organizations are also in on the action. A Pennsylvania school district recently settled a lawsuit accusing it of spying on kids through the laptops it gave to them for free. And the Chinese are well-known for using technology to spy on other countries, including the USA.
Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to avoid this invasion of privacy.

• Don't click on unknown links or download programs from companies you don't trust. That cute video of dancing babies or that absorbing game may be hiding spyware.

• Detach your we**am and mic from your system when you're not using them. If they're built in, cover the camera lens with some opaque tape. Put cotton on top of the mic and cover both with tape as well.

• Watch the indicator light next to your cameras and mics. If it comes on and start flashing and you're not using it, then someone is using them to spy on you. Immediately disconnect your device from the Internet and turn it off. If you don't have the tech savvy to hunt down the source of the spyware, ask a high-tech friend for help. You may also need to get professional help to eliminate the problem.
