Paramount Pictures Film Exchange Building

The Paramount Pictures Film Exchange, built in 1926, is a City of Pittsburgh Historic Landmark. This building is a rare remaining piece of Pittsburgh's "Film Row" and will be renovated its new owner, Alexander Denmarsh of Denmarsh Photography, Inc. www.denmarsh.com www.facebook.com/denmarshphoto A Bit of History: From the 1920s until the 1980s, the film exchange was operated by Paramount Pictures as it housed film reels, offices, and private screening rooms. Theater owners visited the exchange to view a picture before purchasing it to play in their theaters. Pittsburgh’s film exchanges were all within blocks of each other, forming a “film row.” Only three of the original buildings remain. What's Next: Renovations to transform the building will begin soon. It will be home to Denmarsh Photography, Inc.'s new studio, as well as the offices of Start Uptown, a nonprofit organization that provides collaborative work and living space for early-stage entrepreneurs and their companies at below market rates. Alexander also hopes to find a restaurateur to open a cafe and bar in the vault room.

Future of old Pittsburgh film building in question

With only a few hurdles in the way, we're hopeful that the Paramount Pictures Film Exchange Building will be under construction in March. Get the full Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story here: http://bit.ly/U6sZQF. To keep up with Alexander (the Paramount's new owner) and his studio, follow Denmarsh Photography, Inc.

The former Paramount Film Exchange building in Uptown has no off-street parking to go with its redevelopment plans, and Pittsburgh's zoning code says it needs 12 spaces.

The Paramount has been "saved," but we need investors! We’re not looking for donations, we want you to own a piece of film history. We put a LEED-certified roof on it, are about to get electricity and plumbing, and we’re ready for windows and doors, but we need investors. If you or anyone you know is interested in buying a share of the Paramount, call me at 412-352-3417 for a tour. Thanks, Rick

If you know anyone who remembers the Paramount Building when it was still in operation as a film exchange, please let us know. We're looking for any old pictures of the building we can find, or any stories anyone has about the business or the people who worked/visited there.

The screening room was most recently used by the City as a tool checkout room. There was a steel lockbox actually inserted into the middle of the movie screen wall and a large steel cage where tools were locked up over night. Both are now gone, and the room actually looks like a place where films can be shown again. Beautiful trim around the screen. More pictures soon.

There was an air-handling unit (installed in 1939) roughly the size and weight of a cargo van suspended over the side entrance, which we dismantled and hauled away.
