Denis Theatre

Denis Theatre We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, formed in 2007 to preserve the site of the Denis Theatre on Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon and reimagine it for generations to come through meaningful film and arts programming to entertain, educate, and enrich.
The Denis Theatre operated for nearly seventy years in the heart of Mt. Lebanon, PA until it closed in 2004. The project to revitalize the Denis Theatre into a film site and cultural center, which began in 2008, has created tremendous grass roots excitement anticipation in the community. In the Fall of 2009 we launched our Capital Campaign, Phase 1 of which includes purchasing the building, renovating one auditorium, bringing all of the systems up to code, making the building handicapped accessible and bringing art films back to the South Hills as quickly as possible. In 2010, the foundation bought the building. With your help, as well the support of private individuals, arts, youth and education oriented organizations and the large community that has come to love and miss The Denis Theatre we will be successful in our goal to bring movies back to uptown Mt. Lebanon.

Overview — The Denis Theatre

Number crunching: Did you know that the Denis runs two local film programs? We recently tallied up our past attendance and realized that 1700+ people have participated in those programs since 2017!

Over those three years, we have regularly visited 6 different senior sites to present our Meet Me at the Movies showings to residents with memory loss, and our Reel to Real groups have discussed 22 different films. We can't wait to get back to hosting these events! Until then, please keep watching our page for updates, recommendations, and reviews!

Reel to Real is a film discussion group that offers a social opportunity for a mixed group of community members of all ages to enjoy and appreciate the art medium of film together.

We know that there are many of us in Mt. Lebanon and the surrounding neighborhoods who love film and the arts. We have strength in numbers, which means that ALL levels of donation will play an important role in bringing great film back to this community. Whether it be lots of people coming together with a small monthly donation or major gifts, all of it matters, and all of it is needed to make the Denis renovations a reality. If you're not already, please consider giving today, even if only a little! #givingtuesday https://www.denistheatre.org/donate-now

So many people stopped by the Denis on Light Night! We're feeling the love. Thanks for the support and interest you all expressed. We enjoyed the questions were excited to see that and a ton of you signed up for our email updates. Some asked how to donate, so here's the link: https://www.denistheatre.org/donate-now . Donations at any level get us closer to starting construction and are appreciated!

2019 has been a great year for the Denis!

Did you know: We recently entered into the FINAL design phase for the theater with our architect, and we can't wait to share more about the plan's details as they are worked out. We've increased our grant-funded programming and events, modernized our website, and brought on new volunteers.

We are active and focused on our goal of starting construction by 2020, but we still have a long way to go to make that a reality, so our leadership committee is continuing to seek major gifts and pursue grants and other types of funding to make that possible.

Thank you all for your support, and please help/continue to help financially if you can. If you're interested in making a gift to the Denis, please visit our donation page or contact us! Or if you know someone else who might be, let them know also. Donations can be contingent on our beginning construction. Please share this post with your networks and spread the word to friends and neighbors.

Hoping we can all come together as a community and make this happen within the next year to bring back great film and more to Mt. Lebanon!

What a terrific crowd at our Reel to Real event at USC Library last night! We loved watching and discussing The Mustang with our "NEIGH"bors! If you weren't there, take a look at what you missed and make sure you join us in January at Washington Square Condos and in March at USC Library. As always thanks to our fabulous library partner, Walker Evans!

The Hollywood Theatre

Some inspiration out of Oregon!

Portland, OR's Hollywood Theatre opened in 1926 as a vaudeville/silent film house, but by the 80s, it had fallen into disrepair. Then in 1997, the building was purchased by a nonprofit who managed to restore the neglected space. In recent years, they've additionally managed through community crowdfunding efforts to bring in 70mm projection, get new seats, open a microcinema at the PDX airport, and save Movie Madness, a beloved local film rental store/film museum.

As a nonprofit that is trying to renovate an old theater ourselves, we at the Denis are admiring the Hollywood from across the country. Check them out!

Friday GIF Poll! Post your guilty pleasure movies (or maybe you feel no shame--good for you!). What do you like that you feel like you shouldn't, wouldn't normally, or that others don't seem to? As we get closer and closer to rebuilding the Denis, we will increasingly be reaching out to the community for input, so keep an eye out here for specific questions including the one posted earlier today, and please participate to help us shape the future theater!

When we open, we will be a fantastic independent film house, of course, but we want to be more than that! Please help us plan by telling us what kinds of shows, performances, art...etc you'd like available uptown that we can offer! What's missing from Mt. Lebanon that you wish there were more of?

NAME THAT MOVIE - No cheating!

"What is there to fight for? Everything. Life itself, isn't that enough, to be lived, suffered, enjoyed. What is there to fight for? Life is a beautiful, magnificent thing, even to a jellyfish...I know a man without arms who can play a scherzo on a violin and does it all with his toes. The trouble is you won't fight. You've given in, continually dwelling on sickness and death. But there's something just as inevitable as death, and that's life. Life, life, life. Think of all the power that's in the universe, moving the earth, growing the trees. That's the same power within you if you only have courage and the will to use it."
