Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee

Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee The first video store in Los Angeles and will be the last -- with the biggest collection of film and television in the world. Over 100,000 tapes and DVD's.
(39)

From the dawn of cinema, the dawn of television, to the present day. We opened in 1969 and the rest is history. We rent and sell videos that encompass the history of film and television. Not only that, but we have thousands of original posters, and a photo collection second only to the Library of Congress (no kidding - we've got over 2 million photos). We have more and know more Hollywood history than any video store in the world. Come visit us and we'll prove it!

Sorry to say folks, but Eddie Brandt's is currently shut down and moving out of our present location (since 1998!) Our giant inventory has been moved to a warehouse as of this morning. But we're not finished yet! We are looking for a new location to re-open. This Corona virus has knocked around most businesses, including ours -- but it has also hammered the commercial real estate market. We may find a good deal in the near future. Hey, maybe some of you locals might know of a decent-sized storefront that is for lease in the eastern part of the Valley. Let us know. Meanwhile, we will keep all of you posted when there are developments toward our re-birth. .

We've got almost all of the Academy Award nominated movies for rent. Yep, 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,' The Irishman, Parasite, Two Popes, Ford vs Ferrari, Joker, Harriet, Marriage Story, 1917, Little Women, Judy, Toy Story 4, Bombshell...... and some that came close, like Motherless Brooklyn, The Lighthouse, and Uncut Gems. C'mon down! You know you've missed at least some of these.

HALLOWEEN! C'mon down and get your tricks and treats from our vast catalog of horror and sci-fi. Why settle for the obvious newer horror films on cable or streaming? We have the silents (for instance, Phantom of The Opera 1925 Lon Chaney) to the Universal classics (Wolfman, Mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon) to the Hammer horrors, to the anthology horrors (Vault of Horror, Tales from The Crypt, Madhouse, Dr. Terror's House of Horrors, Creepshow) to the endless pile of Jason's, Mike Myers, Freddy Krugers, to all the zombie movies, Exorcist's, Omen's, even the blaxploitations (Blacula, Blackenstein). Eighties horrors (Evil Dead, Night of The Demon, etc.) to later stuff like Near Dark, Ginger Snaps, The Craft, Dog Soldiers, 28 Days Later, Body Snatchers. And spoofs like Shaun of The Dead, and even its darker Cuban version Juan of The Dead! The list goes on and on, including recent horrors like It Follows, or Goodbye Mommy, or The Babadook. It's scary how many we've got. Come on over and get 'em!

JERRY LEWIS -- he had to go sometime -- but 91 years is a good run. Many of us loved him when were kids, and an entire generation knows him best from the yearly MDA telethons. Okay, so as adults we recognize that he made a lot of bad films, and is hard to watch in plenty of them, but still there are some gems in his long career. Is there any comedian out there, past or present, that could play the polar-opposite characters in The Nutty Professor as well or better? And 1961's The Ladies Man is consistently wacky. And, of course, his later dramatic performances in The King of Comedy and tv's Wiseguy (1988) showed a natural acting talent free from the forced mugging of his comedies. Here at Eddie Brandt's, we have almost all of his work, good and bad, from his film and tv stuff with Dean Martin, to his own films, tv guest appearances, and even a documentary on his ill-fated The Day The Clown Cried. Come on down and get yourself some Jerry!

Sadly, the Reaper has taken George Romero and Martin Landau this last weekend. Looks like that Bela Lugosi biopic starring Landau and directed by Romero is in permanent development hell (and "When there's no more room in hell...."). But there are many memorable films and performances of this titanic twosome to reach back and watch. And, of course, we have most, maybe all, of their films. Stop over and check them out... and please, no Romero-coming-back-from-the-dead jokes -- that's all too easy.

THE WEIRD & THE NEW: Sure, we got Patriot's Day, Magnificent Denzel Seven, Passengers, Hacksaw Ridge, Sing -- for all you new film seekers. But we also have some nutty stuff for connisewers of the bizarre. How about 'Girl Walks Home Alone at Night' -- an Iranian vampire film! Reminds us that we also have 'Juan Of The Dead' -- the first genre film ever made in Cuba, and it's a semi-spoof of 'Shaun Of The Dead' and almost as good. 'The Lobster' is purposely bizarre, with a lumpy, chubby Colin Farrell having to find a mate by a deadline or be turned into a lobster. A deadpan black comedy. We have 'Crazy Love' -- a documentary about a nutcase who is so cruel to his girlfriend that he blinds her with acid..... then she agrees to marry him! True story! And how about 'The Beaver Trilogy' -- A filmmaker does a short documentary on a kooky jackass that he later has Sean Penn (in 1981, at the infancy of his career) replicate. Then to top it off, the same filmmaker remakes it again in 1985 with Crispin Glover! Must be seen to be believed. So come see it -- come see them all!
