A British drama produced by MGM, the film revolves around a yellow Rolls-Royce Phantom II that passes from one owner to another, with the car becoming a silent witness to three completely different stories. The film was directed by Anthony Asquith and written by Terence Rattigan.
The story begins in England, when the Marquess of Frinton buys the car as an anniversary gift for his wife. But he discovers that she is having an affair with another man inside the very car he bought for her, prompting him to sell it.
The Rolls-Royce then passes to Paolo Maltese, an American gangster who purchases it while in Italy. He leaves it with his mistress, Mae Jenkins, while he is away. Mae soon begins a romantic relationship with a young photographer named Stefano, and the car becomes part of a dangerous love story whose consequences could prove fatal.
The car eventually comes into the possession of Gerda Millett, a wealthy American widow who travels in it to Yugoslavia in 1941.
And this is where the film changes completely.
Gerda meets Davich, a Yugoslav man played by Omar Sharif, who helps her cross the border. But she gradually discovers that Davich is not simply a mysterious man offering her assistance; he is a Yugoslav resistance fighter confronting the growing N**i threat.
As the N**is begin bombing the country, Gerda finds herself forced to take a stand, transforming her story from a personal journey into one involving resistance against the occupation.
β Omar Sharif in the Film
Omar Sharif plays Davich, one of the central characters in the film's third segment, opposite Swedish star Ingrid Bergman, who portrays Gerda Millett.
The role came very early in Sharif's international career, following Lawrence of Arabia and preceding Doctor Zhivago, during the period when he was establishing himself as an international film star. The AFI database lists him among the film's 1965 credits as Davich.
