Pan African Film & Arts Festival

Pan African Film & Arts Festival America's Largest and Most Prestigious International Black Film Festival
Established in 1992, The Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of cultural and racial tolerance and understanding through the exhibition of film, art and creative expression.
(390)

Every February we bring you Films and Art from within the U.S. and all over the world throughout the African Diaspora!

Mission: It is PAFF’s goal to present and showcase the broad spectrum of Black creative works, particularly those that reinforce positive images and help to destroy negative stereotypes. We believe film and art can lead to better understanding and foster communication between peoples of diverse cultures, races, and lifestyles, while at the same time, serve as a vehicle to initiate dialogue on the important issues of our times.

Mira Nair

One of our favorite directors at PAFF Mira Nair

There is great power in telling our stories. It is something that can be done if one applies oneself to the understanding of the craft, the understanding of the narrative. My mantra is that if we don’t tell our own stories, no one else will. Join me in my new MasterClass :)

Bob Marley & the Wailers
Lee “Scratch” Perry
Peter Tosh
Gregory Isaacs
Dennis Brown
Alton Ellis
Carl Malcolm
The Skatalites
Ken Boothe
Lord Creator
and many more. ———
Directed by: Mark James - STUDIO 17: THE LOST REGGAE TAPES is compelling story of the Chin’s, The Chinese Jamaican family behind “Studio 17”, a legendary recording studio located in downtown Kingston, Jamaica and at the heart of the music revolution that followed Jamaican independence in 1962.
Artists who recorded there listed above.

Political turmoil in the late 1970s forced the Chin family to flee to New York and the recordings were abandoned. Forty years later, a treasure trove of original studio tapes has been salvaged - revealing unique and stunning recordings from the ‘Golden Age’ of reggae, many of which were unreleased and have never been heard before.
As the tapes are played they give rise to a myriad of wonderful stories and in a highly poignant conclusion, the teenage voice of the late Dennis Brown is beautifully re-mixed with the vocals of a rising teenage star, Hollie Stephenson, all magically orchestrated by producer and one time Eurythmics star, Dave Stewart.

Cast: Levi Roots, Clive Chin, Pat Chin, Lord Creator, Jimmy Cliff, Dave Stewart, Sly Dunbar, Lester Sterling, Maxi Priest

Co-founders of the Pan African Film Festival, award-winning actor Danny Glover and Ayuko Babu Release Statement on Death of Ja’Net Dubois | Photo: Venus Bernardo ………………………………………..
LOS ANGELES – Founded by award-winning actor Danny Glover, actress Ja’Net Dubois and Ayuko Babu, the 28th annual Pan African Film and Arts Festival (PAFF) is currently taking place at the Cinemark 15 Theatres, located at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles.
………………………………………..
STATEMENT FROM GLOVER AND BABU ON THE PASSING OF JA’NET DUBOIS:
“We are shocked and stunned by the passing of one of the founders of the Pan African Film and Arts Festival, and one of the most important shining and guiding lights. Our sister, Ja’Net DuBois, epitomized a true, conscious Pan African artist who mastered the ability to be idealistic and practical at the same time. It’s rare to find a person — let alone an artist — who strikes a wonderful balance.
If Madame DuBois had lived during the times of the great Pharaohs; or the great kingdoms of Timbuktu; or the great kingdoms in southern Africa, such as the Zimbabwe and Zulu kingdoms, she would have been known as a Jali or a Sangoma. In our contemporary times, she was able to use modern technology to spread her voice, her image, her spirit, her songs and our stories around the globe and touch us with humor, dignity and her ancient wisdom.
A mighty giant tree has fallen in the forest today! With her death occurring in the midst of the Pan African Film and Arts Festival, she left us an important message — support cultural institutions like her beloved Pan African Film and Arts Festival, and it will point you toward liberation and freedom. If not — like the bluesman, Taj Maahal sings — you’ll stumble and fall. — co-founders Danny Glover and Ayuko Babu,
on behalf of the staff of the Pan African Film and Arts Festival and the many thousands of people who attend it ………………………………………..
PAFF is the largest Black film festival in the U.S. and the largest Black History Month cultural event in the nation. This year, it has selected a record-breaking 225 film, representing 52 countries in 26 languages. Plus, ArtFest will…(full alert at PAFF website)

I REMEMBER MALCOLM & THE EVENING OF HIS DEATH: https://www.democracynow.org/2020/2/21/malcolm_xs_daughter_ilyasah_shabazz_on?fbclid=IwAR32xAiJFJqEKG73mX1zaOnY4gAVktsyYyScKeo-tvpr7_MwffP2SZFj1dY I remember Malcolm, 1st time I met was in NYC on 125st Street 1962, he was preaching to we who stood around him listening to his words of wisdom... He was very expressive and help many of us plan the course of our lives... I was 32 years old at the time, and thereafter attended many of his meeting over the next 3 years until I went to Accra Ghana in west Africa, to take in Nkrumah's nation building programs, aka; Freedom Fighters.. It was a BORN AGAIN EXPERIENCE during the next 11 years. 1965 to 1976. And I'll admit there were times I 'd kick myself as to why I had ventured there when it came to surviving, but I never gave up,,, it became a make it with dignity or die trying. PS: our only option was to seek repatriation via; the American Embassy, or seeking help from my family in America. Btw, Malcolm death (fortunately on the evening of his murder) I worked overtime and didn't attend that meeting) was the final disillusionment, that prompted me to leave the USA 7 months after his death. https://www.democracynow.org/2020/2/21/malcolm_xs_daughter_ilyasah_shabazz_on?fbclid=IwAR32xAiJFJqEKG73mX1zaOnY4gAVktsyYyScKeo-tvpr7_MwffP2SZFj1dY It was a BORN AGAIN EXPERIENCES.
