Stars may keep spinning fast, long into old age

"Stars may keep some of their youthful vigor as they age. Astronomers have spotted a star in its twilight years that spins much faster than expected. The discovery supports a new idea that, rather than continually slowing with age, some stars may have a magnetic midlife crisis that keeps them on a roll." 🌟⭐️✨

NASA’s TESS telescope has spotted an old star that spins too fast for theory to explain, suggesting that stars may have a magnetic midlife crisis.

There is a swarm of migratory grasshoppers in Las Vegas. Check out these images.

"State entomologist Jeff Knight said in a news conference Friday the grasshopper population was likely nourished by the Southwest's relatively wet winter and spring. He said the insects are relatively harmless and will likely stay for a few more weeks before continuing to migrate north."

NASA Tracks Wildfires From Above to Aid Firefighters Below

"Frontline responders do the heavy lifting when it comes to fighting and managing wildfires, but they’re often helped by the view from higher up. Each year, a coordinated effort from the U.S. Forest Service aircraft teams and satellite teams from NASA and NOAA provide valuable information that help fire management teams on the ground make the best decisions possible. Satellite observations and data from new NASA airborne field campaigns also help us understand the role, frequency, and intensity of fires in a changing world." (NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration) #Wildfires #FirstResponders #FieldCampaigns #TechnologyRules

Every evening from late spring to early fall, two planes lift off from airports in the western United States and fly through the sunset, each headed for an active wildfire, and then another, and another.

"The discovery of a super-scorched planet orbiting around a dim, nearby star has helped reveal the presence of two more previously unseen planets — one of which could host liquid water and thus be friendly to life, astronomers say" (Los Angeles Times) #ScienceRules

Astronomers using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite have found a super-Earth planet capable of harboring life. It’s 31 light-years away.

DID YOU KNOW... that in three years and as early as 4-months old, one unspayed female & one unneutered male can produce 512 pups! 😳😲 That’s a whole lot of pups that will be needing homes. Here are the benefits of spaying and neutering your dog:
🐾
1. Reduce or completely stop your male pet from spraying and marking. It can make him less likely to roam which in turn reduces chances of being hit by a car, getting into a fight, getting lost or even stolen.
🐾
2. Reduce aggression and make it easier for you to train your furry companion!
🐾
3. Prevent your female pet from developing uterine, ovarian, and breast cancer.
🐾
4. Prevent your male pet from developing testicular and perianal tumors, hernias and prostate problems which means it can add another 3-5 years to their lifespan!
🐾
5. Help reduce overpopulation in animal shelters and homeless pets on the streets!

Summertime means disease-carrying insects. Here's what you should know.

🦟🦟🦟“There’s no vaccine for any of the vector-borne diseases in the United States. Protecting yourself against ticks and mosquitoes relies on personal protective measures."

Illnesses spread by ticks, mosquitoes, and kissing bugs are on the rise—a trend experts say will continue as the climate warms.

🐶🐾 Adding a puppy to your family is super exciting but it can also be confusing and overwhelming when it comes to puppy vaccines. Here are some helpful tips on how to get started! 🐾
.
First and foremost, your 8-week old pup should get their DA2PP vaccine to help prevent distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis], parainfluenza, parvovirus, deworming, and bordetella [kennel cough]. They should get their second dose of vaccines three weeks later.
.
And three weeks after that, your pup can be spayed or neutered, receive their last dose of vaccinations to prevent rabies, and get microchipped! Your puppy will then be fully vaccinated and ready to safely explore the outdoors!
.
For more information about free spay/neuter or to see affordable vaccine prices for your pup, please visit Team Spay4LA. NASA Fed Apollo 11 Moon Rocks to Cockroaches (And Then Things Got Even Weirder)

"We had to prove that we weren't going to contaminate not only human beings, but we weren't going to contaminate fish and birds and animals and plants and you name it," Charles Berry, who was in charge of medical operations during Apollo, said in a 1999 oral history. "Any of the Earth's biosphere, we had to prove we weren't going to affect it. So we had to develop an amazing program that was carried off really for three flights' worth. A lot of trouble." #SpaceExploration #Space #NASA #Apollo11 #Apollo50 #SpaceGerms

This surprisingly smart frog makes maps in its mind

“We hypothesize that because of their natural history, poison frogs evolved a more advanced cognitive ability—to flexibly use environmental cues to find locations,” says Sabrina Burmeister, associate professor at the University of North Carolina and senior author of the study, published earlier this year. “You’re not likely to find these abilities in all frog species." #NationalGeographic #MentalMaps #LeapFrog #SmartFrog

The tiny green-and-black poison frog displays an advanced cognitive ability never before seen in amphibians.

Astronauts in Training

This week our 7th/8th grade 'Working in Space' campers got an idea of what it’s like to live and work in space! They got to train like astronauts in weightless conditions by learning to build underwater structures at the Expo Center diving pool. The class was led by our Ecology programs curator along with our dive safety team and Education staff.
