Outside the Box [Office] Outside the Box [Office] is SCA's ongoing weekly showcase for upcoming international, documentary and independent cinema. The series draws from around the globe to present movies that may challenge, inspire or simply entertain and often features recent award-winning films from Sundance, Cannes, Berlin, SXSW and Venice Film Festivals.

All screenings are free of charge and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. All screenings will be OVERBOOKED to ensure capacity. You can check out the events schedule and make reservations here:

The We And the I Official Trailer #1 (2012) - Michel Gondry Movie HD

Tonight is our screening of Michael Gondry's The We and the I at 8:30pm in SCA108.

Collaborating for two years with actual students at a neighborhood after-school arts program in the Bronx, Gondry's large ensemble cast, all of them first-timers, essentially play themselves, though the script (credited to Gondry, Jeffrey Grimshaw and Paul Proch) is an artful, fully imagined vision of the life these kids live--and the future that awaits them--rendered without a trace of moralizing or condescension.

War Witch (Official U.S. Theatrical Trailer)

Beyond the Hills Trailer

Beyond the Hills is showing TONIGHT at 8.15pm in SCA108!

The film is Cristian Mungiu's interpretation of the non-fiction novels of Tatiana Niculescu Bran, centers on an isolated Orthodox convent in Romania, where Alina has just been reunited with Voichita after spending several years in Germany. The two young women have supported and loved each other since meeting as children in an orphanage.

War Don Don: SXSW 2010 Accepted Film

Our screening of War Don Don, which had been cancelled in the Fall semester, is happening TONIGHT at 7pm in 108!! The film, directed by first-time filmmaker Rebecca Richman Cohen, follows the war crimes trial of Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebel leader Issa Sesay, exploring the complex relationship between individual accountability, collective reconciliation and the limits of international justice.

Tomorrow evening we will be showing Janeane From Des Moines at 7pm in 108. The film examines republican values in an era of change and disarray, following a conservative Iowa housewife who works as a home health aide, keeps busy in her garden, and attends a local women’s bible study group. But as the 2012 presidential election draws near, she is determined to find a Republican candidate who will take America back from the Democrats, repeal Obamacare, defund Planned Parenthood and get rid of gay marriage – issues that she feels are destroying the country she loves.

THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE - Official Trailer

Don't miss tonight's screening of Central Park Five, with a reception prior to the film starting at 6pm!

In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were arrested and later convicted of brutally beating and raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park. New York Mayor Ed Koch called it the “crime of the century” and it remains to date one of the biggest media stories of our time. The five each spent between six and 13 years in prison before a serial rapist confessed that he alone had committed the crime, resulting in their convictions being overturned.

We are screening Betzy Bromberg’s Voluptuous Sleep (2011), a mesmerizing two-part 16mm meditation on the nuances of light, sound and feeling as evoked through the poetic artifices of cinema. Bromberg’s close-up lens becomes a tool of infinite discovery that reveals as much about our bodily sensations as it does the natural world.

This Is Not A Film Trailer

We've got a screening of This Is Not a Film tomorrow at 7pm! The 'non-film' depicts the day-to-day life of acclaimed director Jafar Panahi (OFFSIDE, THE CIRCLE). While appealing his sentence – six years in prison and a 20-year ban from filmmaking – fellow director Mojtaba Mirtahmasb (Lady of the Roses) visits Mr. Panahi at his Tehran apartment and films him talking to his family and lawyer on the phone, reflecting on the art of filmmaking, meeting some of his neighbors and even interacting with an inquisitive iguana.
