Don’t have any set agenda or preconceived ideas. Just writedown what you get, even if the elements you catch seem disparate at first. You’ll be ableto use them in different ways as you move through the project.

When arriving at your ruling idea, or log line, think about the personality and essence of your project, and what differentiates it from other similar expressions. Your project is about one thing, not nine million. Pretend you are distilling perfume.

What do you want to explore? I think it’s so cool that Woody Allen risks doing both comedy and drama. He is a genius, but he risks, man. Write about an approach you are interested in, that excites you, that you are serious about, and that you know is going to develop you and allow you to deal with aspects of your artistry you’ve not realized before. An approach that will ignite a dynamic relationship between you and your work.

You’ll know you’re in “inspiration is for amateurs” mode when a friend calls you and you respond, “Hello,” as if the caller just killed your whole family. Because every second counts and you don’t have
even a millisecond to talk, and your work better still be good, and no one gives a s**t if 1:00 is your worst hour to write or not -- you still have to deliver on time. Luckily, I made the deadline!

Sometimes you just have to stop fussing with yourself. Accept some things about yourself and your nature and leave yourself alone about it. Adopt a motto about yourself like, “Who cares?” If you are a real working artist, you’ve got bigger fish to fry, believe me, than worrying about what’s wrong with you. If your work is getting done to capacity, you don’t need to sweat the rest -- it’s a waste of energy.

09/05/2016

The sensibility of the world of your project should become how you view and experience your life for the duration of the time you are working on it -- you can see the same black bird and it will resonate differently with you if you are working on Snow White or working
on The Exorcist or working on MacBeth. World, world, world. You must stay in the sensibility of your endeavor and be rock solid in it.

You are not afraid to love, and you don’t have to apologize for this -- it’s a great quality about you. Shine bright, don’t ensmallen yourself. The universe is your source, not this one person. F**k this person; you’re here to work. What they do or don’t do is none of your business. Make sure your art is a big expression no matter the scale; find opulence even in minimalism. Be sparse and beautiful.

Your work is making sure you can hold its next level, the way Picasso had to be strong enough to hold the Rose period, and then grow to hold the the Blue, then grow again to hold the Cubist. This is all work-related, and you have to see it that way, rather than get all caught up in the feeling and trying to escape it. The feeling will go away when you shift whatever needs to be shifted, the same way the glitch in your lower back will go away when you align your posture.

The ability to be with your feelings is a muscle, like everything else. It takes practice to use it, and courage. No one wants to feel pain or fear, anger or jealousy, sadness orvulnerability, or resistance, or l oss. It seems counterintuitive to move closer to these emotions,
and requires great tenderness, patience and sensitivity, between you and you. For most people, this idea is already enough to make them want to throw up. But if you avoid feeling the dark, you won’t be able to feel the sweet, either.

Expanding your container looks like saying yes to everything, then slowing down your breathing, really slowing down everything, like a martial artist -- like Bruce Lee -- and looking, with extreme focus and precision, at your schedule. Then, you dig deep and plug all the projects into your schedule, thinking carefully about when to do what. What would be most auspicious?

08/25/2016

You’re talented, and so you’ve probably reaped the ‘benefits’ of the fact that “talent is sexy.” But now your “talent is sexy” days are over, and you are deciding to get your work done for real -- not just funnel all your energy into helping other people build their careers. This shift means that you have to restructure your rings.

In this assignment, do one free-write per day about World. A free-write is a stream-of-consciousness writing exercise. Set the timer on your iPhone for 15 minutes, and writethe whole time. You will reach a point where you feel a tired, draggy feeling, and it’s very important to push through this, because that’s where the most fertile and surprising information comes from -- not before!
