Virtual conversation with Elisabeth Moss!

Sat. 1/9 | 5 PM PT

Star of SHIRLEY and THE INVISIBLE MAN

RSVP here-
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/virtual-qa-with-shirley-and-the-invisible-man-star-elisabeth-moss-tickets-133772594431

About Elisabeth Moss
Two of the year’s most inventive thrillers, SHIRLEY and THE INVISIBLE MAN, have one thing in common: actress Elisabeth Moss. As renown horror writer Shirley Jackson, she twists the psychological screws on a young couple, while in the latter film, she’s on the receiving end of abuse from a man who may – or may not – be there. “The idea of seeing something that nobody else can see, that’s my bread and butter,” Moss notes of her INVISIBLE adversary. “It’s what I do every day for a living.” Equally busy on television, the performer brought brutal authenticity to her work on Mad Men, Top of the Lake and her role as Offred in The Handmaid’s Tale, for which she won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series. Moss has also become a force behind the camera, producing films including SHIRLEY and Alex Ross Perry’s HER SMELL, and executive producing The Handmaid’s Tale.

SHIRLEY
2020, Neon, 107 min, USA, Dir: Josephine Decker
Renowned horror writer Shirley Jackson (Elisabeth Moss) is on the precipice of writing her masterpiece when the arrival of newlyweds upends her meticulous routine and heightens tensions in her already tempestuous relationship with her philandering husband (Michael Stuhlbarg). The middle-aged couple, prone to ruthless barbs and copious afternoon cocktails, begins to toy mercilessly with the naive young couple at their door. Winner of the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Auteur Filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival. “As willfully unconventional as a literary portrait could possibly be, MADELINE’S MADELINE director Josephine Decker’s take on Shirley Jackson is a thrillingly perverse example of what happens when the shackles of biopic formula are cast aside.” – Benjamin Lee, The Guardian.

THE INVISIBLE MAN
2020, Universal, 124 min, Australia/USA, Dir: Leigh Whannell
What you can’t see can hurt you. In this terrifying modern tale of obsession inspired by Universal’s classic monster character, Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss) is trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). Finally she escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid). But when Cecilia’s abusive ex commits su***de and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turns lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

AMMONITE
2020, Neon, 120 min, UK/Australia/USA, Dir: Francis Lee
In the 1840s, self-taught palaeontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) works alone on the wild Southern English coastline of Lyme Regis. The days of her famed discoveries behind her, she now hunts for common fossils to sell to rich tourists to support herself and her ailing mother (Gemma Jones). When one such tourist, Roderick Murchison (James McArdle), arrives in Lyme, he entrusts Mary with the care of his young wife Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan), who is recuperating from a personal tragedy. Too poor to turn him down but proud and dedicated to her work, Mary clashes with her unwanted guest – they are two women from utterly different worlds. Yet Mary and Charlotte eventually discover they can each offer what the other has been searching for: the realization that they are not alone. It is the beginning of a passionate and all-consuming love affair that will defy all social bounds and alter the course of both lives irrevocably.

PALM SPRINGS
2020, Hulu, 90 min, USA, Dir: Max Barbakow.
Today, tomorrow, and yesterday are all the same for Nyles (Andy Samberg), who is stuck in a time loop at a wedding in Palm Springs. But when Sarah (Cristin Milioti), the sister of the bride, gets stuck as well, she helps him realize that carrying the weight of existence might just be a little better together. Co-starring J.K. Simmons, Meredith Hagner, Camila Mendes, Tyler Hoechlin and Peter Gallagher. “This ironic, irreverent and at times insane rom-com from the Lonely Island gang does something new with a genre audiences have experienced a million times before.” – Peter DeBruge, Variety.

HORSE FEATHERS
1932, Universal, 68 min, USA, Dir: Norman Z. McLeod
The Marx Bros.’ zaniest film finds Groucho as the new president of Huxley College, where his son (Zeppo!) is romancing Thelma Todd and Harpo and Chico have to kidnap the star football players from rival Darwin. Cowritten by S.J. Perelman, whose literate wordplay makes this a special treat, and containing the classic speakeasy and singing-lesson routines. With David Landau, Nat Pendleton and Robert Grieg (for once not cast as a butler).

DUCK SOUP
1933, Universal, 68 min, USA, Dir: Leo McCarey
Margaret Dumont appoints Groucho (Rufus T. Firefly) as prime minister of Freedonia, and he promptly declares war on a neighboring country for no particular reason. With the legendary mirror sequence and Harpo and Chico’s mercurial harassing of the lemonade vendor.

SYLVIE’S LOVE
2020, Amazon Studios, 110 min, USA, Dir: Eugene Ashe
In SYLVIE’S LOVE, the jazz is smooth and the air sultry in the hot New York summer of 1957. Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha), a saxophonist, spends late nights playing in a jazz quartet behind a less-talented but well-known bandleader. Sylvie (Tessa Thompson), who dreams of a career in television, spends her summer days helping around her father’s record store as she waits for her fiancé to return from war. When Robert takes a part-time job at the record store, the two begin a friendship that sparks a deep passion in each of them unlike anything they have felt before. As the summer winds down, life takes them in different directions, bringing their relationship to an end. Years pass, Sylvie’s career as a TV producer blossoms, while Robert has to come to terms with what the age of Motown is doing to the popularity of Jazz. In a chance meeting, Sylvie and Robert cross paths again, only to find that while their lives have changed, their feelings for each other remain the same. Writer-director Eugene Ashe combines romance and music into a sweeping story that brings together changing times, a changing culture and the true price of love.

Our Story

About American Cinematheque Established in 1981, the American Cinematheque is a 501 C 3 non-profit viewer-supported film exhibition and cultural organization dedicated to the celebration of the Moving Picture in all of its forms. At the Egyptian and Aero Theatres, the Cinematheque presents daily film and digital programming which ranges from the classics of American and international cinema to new independent films, shorts and premieres. Exhibition of rare works, special and rare prints, etc., combined with fascinating post-screening discussions with the filmmakers who created the work, are a Cinematheque tradition that keep audiences coming back for once-in-a-lifetime cinema experiences. The American Cinematheque renovated and reopened (on Dec. 4, 1998) the historic 1922 Hollywood Egyptian Theatre. This includes a state-of-the-art 616-seat theatre housed within Sid Grauman's first grand movie palace on Hollywood Boulevard. The exotic courtyard is fully restored to its 1922 grandeur. The Egyptian was the home of the very first Hollywood movie premiere in 1922. In January 2005 the American Cinematheque expanded its programming to the 1940 Aero Theatre on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. The American Cinematheque goes on the road to bring its special brand of entertainment to various other venues as well.
