A Recommendation for Casting Director Tulsi Ram

When I came to America in 1985, my dream was to become an actor. When I met Tulsi Ram, he believed in me and helped open doors at the beginning of my Hollywood career. At that time, I was one of the few Afghan actors in Hollywood, and Tulsi saw my passion and dedication. He once told me, “Fahim, one day you’re going to make it.” I will never forget those words.

Tulsi was different from many people I met in the industry. He never asked me for a manager’s or casting fee. He simply believed in helping actors and giving people opportunities. He was not only a talented casting director but also one of the kindest and most generous people I have known in Hollywood.

Tulsi is also a talented musician trained in South Indian Carnatic classical music and has worked in India, France, and the United States. He founded Nandinee Productions and has supported diverse talent throughout his career.

Today, as Tulsi continues his journey in Chennai, India, I want to take a moment to thank and recommend him. Tulsi, thank you for believing in me, helping me at the beginning of my career, and always being a good human being. I will never forget you. I love you, my brother, and I will always be grateful.

I’m truly grateful and honored to have been part of this special event supporting our veterans. 🇺🇸❤️ I recently found this video from January 25, 2018, and I wanted to share it with all of you.
It was an unforgettable experience joining Retired Lieutenant Colonel Michael Moffett of the United States Marine Corps and Master of Ceremonies Jack Heath for Veterans Count in New Hampshire. I had the opportunity to speak about my journey as an Afghan-born American, a linguist and interpreter for the U.S. Marines, an actor, author, and a man of two worlds.
I will always be grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences, stories, and perspective with our veterans and communities. Thank you to Veterans Count, The Music Hall in Portsmouth, the Rochester Opera House, Lieutenant Colonel Moffett, Jack Heath, and everyone who welcomed us so warmly.

Recognizing the People Behind the Scenes of Our Afghan Community
As an Afghan-American actor and author, I would like to take a moment to recognize the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our Afghan culture, traditions, and identity alive in America. For decades, so many people have worked behind the scenes to organize Afghan New Year’s Nowruz, holiday celebrations, cultural events, and community gatherings, yet their hard work often goes unrecognized. Today, I want to introduce and sincerely thank Shoaib Azizi, a man I have known for more than four decades. Throughout the years, Shoaib has dedicated his time and energy to bringing Afghans together and making sure our community continues to celebrate our culture and traditions far from our homeland. We had the opportunity to reconnect again at the Rumi Awards red carpet in Las Vegas, where he once again invited me to be part of Afghan celebrations. Shoaib has also been a real estate broker for more than 17 years, serving the San Diego and Riverside communities in Southern California, while continuing to contribute to Afghan community events, including the Nowruz Afghan New Year Festival in San Diego. Haidar Salim The Golden Voice of Afghanistan
More than five decades ago, I lost one of my greatest hopes in Afghan music when the legendary Afghan singer Ahmad Zahir was tragically killed in Afghanistan in 1979. After his death, and through the years of war and hardship, I felt that something beautiful in Afghan music had been lost.
Then, about three decades ago, while I was in Utah, I heard another extraordinary voice—Haidar Salim, a dear friend of mine. My friend Abdul introduced us, and hearing Haidar sing brought back my love and hope for Afghan music. From that moment, I began calling him “The Golden Voice of Afghanistan.”
Haidar Salim is an Afghan singer who resides in Dublin, California. He was already well known before the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and is one of the few surviving musicians and singers from Afghanistan’s golden era of the 1970s who has continued to inspire audiences for generations.
I am especially proud to see younger Afghan singers following in his footsteps. To the young generation, I say: Learn from your role models. Follow their discipline, character, passion, and love for Afghan music. Don’t lose your way.Talent is important, but character is what makes an artist truly memorable.
Haidar, I am deeply grateful to know you and to call you my friend. Thank you for keeping the beautiful voice and spirit of Afghan music alive for our community and for generations to come.

In 2010, while I was living in Southern California and working in Hollywood, I was invited to an Afghan concert at The Grove in Anaheim, California. After my long journey back from Afghanistan, where I had been serving with the U.S. Marines, I needed a break—a little vacation—and I chose to attend the concert. I was always excited to connect with my fellow Afghans, and I also missed having music in my life. At the concert, I met Mozhdah Jamalzadah, and I was immediately impressed by her. She had blonde hair and a Caucasian appearance, and at first, I honestly didn’t believe she was Afghan. Mozhdah was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1985, and moved with her family to Vancouver, Canada, at a young age because of the civil war. At the time, she wanted to pursue acting and build a career in Hollywood. The concert manager, who knew her well, asked me if I could speak with her and possibly help her get her foot in the door in Hollywood. I have always been straightforward with people, so I told her, “I can open the door for you, but once I open it, the rest is up to you.” That is the same philosophy I have followed when helping other people pursue their dreams in Hollywood: I can open the door, but they have to walk through it and do the work. Mozhdah appreciated my offer, but because she was living in Canada rather than California, I knew it would be difficult for her to move and pursue acting in Hollywood at that time. Over the years, Mozhdah went on to become a prominent Afghan-Canadian singer, activist, and television host, using her music and platform to advocate for human rights, women’s rights, and gender equality and becoming widely recognized for her groundbreaking work.

As an Afghan man, I have always believed in protecting and standing up for women, children, and animals. I even dedicated my book, Fahim Speaks, to my beautiful mother and to women around the world. When I met Aryana Sayeedat the Rumi Awards in Las Vegas, I admired her incredible talent, courage, and dedication. Born in Kabul, Aryana has become a powerful Afghan singer, songwriter, television personality, and advocate for women’s rights, using her global platform to speak out for the freedom and rights of Afghan women and young girls. Aryana, thank you for standing up for women and for being a strong voice for Afghan women around the world. I am Fahim Fazli, an Afghan actor in Hollywood and Bollywood, and I am truly grateful and proud to see my fellow Afghan follow his dreams, passion, and dedication. About 15 years ago, I had the honor of meeting this incredible man, Siyar Bahadurzada, an Afghan-Dutch MMA World Champion, UFC veteran, founder, and head coach. Born in Afghanistan and raised in the Netherlands after immigrating there in 1999, Siyar began training in martial arts at 16 and went on to become the Shooto Light Heavyweight World Champion in Tokyo in 2007 at just 23 years old, successfully defending his title in Brazil. He later trained alongside some of the world's greatest MMA fighters in California. I am very proud to call Siyar my Afghan brother and friend, and I am honored to have witnessed his journey from passion and hard work to becoming a world champion.

As an Afghan-born American actor and author, I have had the privilege of connecting with and loving people throughout most of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan and all 50 states of my adopted country, the United States of America. I’m grateful for the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and to learn that our humanity is bigger than religion or politics. In 2011, I met one of the most talented, stylish, and inspiring Afghan men, and I was immediately impressed by his incredible résumé. I would like to take a moment to introduce my dear brother, Hussain Sadiqi. Born in 1981 in central Afghanistan, Hussain began martial arts at just nine years old, became Afghanistan’s National Champion at 16, and captain of the Afghan National Team at 18. After fleeing Afghanistan in 1999 because of war and persecution, he continued his journey in Australia and was selected to represent Afghanistan in Taekwondo at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, even carrying the Afghan flag at the Opening Ceremony. My dear brother Hussain, I am incredibly proud of you. You are a powerful example of Afghan talent, courage, perseverance, and what is possible when we take our dreams to the world. 🇦🇫❤️🇺🇸
