Apple Immersive Video (AIV) to 4K! Downconverting AIV to non- immersive or “normal” film formats has theoretically been possible, but until now, we hadn’t actually seen it done as a true format conversion. That is, the same AIV film, but downconverted into a traditional cinematic format - AIV pictures and ASAF sound - which has been a far more complex process than expected.
One of the biggest challenges with AIV is that the full experience requires a relatively niche way to watch. What we wanted to explore for business clients in particular was whether the film itself could be accessible across all formats.
Over the past year, we’ve been working on a way to take our AIV documentary Thé Fine Dining Bakery and create a complete 4K Scope, 7.1 surround version from the same AIV edit.
It’s not the same experience, but we can finally make the film available to people to watch on screens they already own, with an experience as close as possible to the full AIV one.
We spoke to Mike Seymour and fxguide about the process and the results.
