Over the years, CREATURE FEATURES has had the distinct pleasure of hosting two gallery exhibits from the work of award-winning illustrator Gris Grimly. First with his own take on Ray Bradbury's THE HALLOWEEN TREE followed by his unique TALES FROM THE BROTHERS GRIMM. We are happy to continue our collaboration by offering Grimly's latest print inspired by Roald Dahl's THE WITCHES titled "Formula 86." His deliciously macabre take on the story's Grand High Witch and her mouse captives was originally created for our Roald Dahl tribute show in 2016 and is available for pre-order now in a limited edition of 50 signed and numbered Giclee's, printed by Static Medium. The pre-order price of $86 + free shipping will be offered from Friday, July 24th at 12 noon until Wednesday, July 29th at 12 noon. All prints sold after these dates will be $95. In 1990, director Nicholas Roeg joined forces with Jim Henson to adapt THE WITCHES into a big screen feature that has terrified the tykes for three decades now. Led by a tour de force performance by Anjelica Huston as The Grand High Witch, the film stumbled at the box office, but has gained momentum to become a favorite amongst now-grownup viewers who were gleefully traumatized as kids. Dahl's tale on screen and in book form remained durable enough for Warner Brothers to revisit the timeless tale with Robert Zemeckis directing and Anne Hathaway stepping into Huston's role. Though the October release has sadly been bumped due to Covid-19, Gris Grimly and Creature Features will unveil our own tribute on Friday, July 24th at 12 noon PST!

Roald Dahl’s THE WITCHES was first published in 1983, nestling suitably amongst the author’s many colorful, yet dark-tinged fables such as CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH and THE BFG. Artist Quentin Blake’s illustrations perfectly captured the twisted tale of a worldwide league of witches and their mad quest to turn sweet, innocent children into mice. THE WITCHES has proudly graced a number of banned book rosters, often billed unfairly for its perceived misogyny and sexism, and most notably ranking #22 on the American Library Association’s list of Most Frequently Challenged Books in 1990-1999.

Talk about last-minute shockers!

Today, an announcement of seismic proportions shudders down the winding hallways of NIGHT GALLERY. Let us explain: These weekly updates have acted as a beacon, sending out carefully crafted teasers across the globe in the hope of gaining the attention of astute art lovers, Rod Serling devotees, and connoisseurs of the macabre. One such notice reached the family of a former TV executive who worked in Hollywood many years ago, an era when the original GALLERY paintings were mere numbered props carelessly stacked in a dank warehouse—later scattered to the four winds by means of mass prop sales for pennies on the dollar. That bright executive recognized a jewel among the props, a portrait of a towering silver-screen matriarch with sculpted hair and piercing eyes, instantly recognizable as the Oscar-winning actress from MILDRED PIERCE (and the unholy shrew from MOMMIE DEAREST). Over the ensuing decades, the portrait found its way from Universal City to the exec’s dining room in Sherman Oaks—then on to San Diego—and eventually to the Pacific Northwest, where she has lain dormant in storage, waiting to be rediscovered.

For us, the intrepid archaeologists, this painting had been catalogued as long thought lost or destroyed. But now, ladies and gentlemen, we present to you master Jaroslav Gebr’s newly resurrected masterpiece, portraying the grand dame of Rod Serling’s NIGHT GALLERY: Ms. Joan Crawford, from Steven Spielberg’s chilling 1969 pilot segment “Eyes.”

Prepare to pay your respects—only in the pages of ROD SERLING’S NIGHT GALLERY: THE ART OF DARKNESS, coming this fall from Creature Features Publishing.

No one has ever captured the inner spark of Ray Harryhausen better than sculptor extraordinaire Mike Hill with this full-size figure of Ray being happily plagued by his own army of skeletons. Creature Features had the fine fortune of being able to unveil this figure to an adoring public in the Winter of 2013, six months after Ray’s passing. Watching the steady stream of smiles as people stared warmly into Ray’s eyes was one of the true golden highlights from our 25+ years of hosting events. It reminded us that one lone art piece with one brilliant concept could elicit waves of pure incandescent delight, however brief. For us, this was lightning in a bottle, and defined the simple joy that we strove to capture with every event we ever hosted, big or small. Happy 100th, Ray. Your light continues to shine. Have you heard about our upcoming book? We're excited to introduce the author of our foreword...

During the long production process, there was much discussion as to who might be most qualified to write the introduction to THE ART OF DARKNESS. Many names were bandied about, but the one person who fit most perfectly was Rod’s youngest daughter, Anne Serling. Anne had penned her own eloquent reminisces of her father in AS I KNEW HIM: MY DAD, ROD SERLING, a powerful, deeply emotional must-read for anyone interested in the personal and professional machinations of the late icon, as told through the eyes of a cherished offspring who witnessed both sides of Serling’s public and private life.

The Serling family’s relationship with NIGHT GALLERY over the years has been complicated, due to Rod’s often contentious dealings with the show’s producers. Anne gracefully sidesteps that drama and shares her own recollections of seeing the NIGHT GALLERY pilot as a teenager, while babysitting on that chilly November night in 1969. She further recognizes the series’ many assets, most notably the standout episodes written by her father, and the paintings of Tom Wright and Jaroslav Gebr.

Much like in her own book (available on Amazon or thru www.rodserlingbooks.com), the introduction is a warm, heartfelt remembrance of her talented father near the end of his too-short career, and provides the reader with firsthand insights that only a loving, perceptive daughter could provide. We are deeply honored by her participation, and look forward to sharing her introduction with you.

Next Wednesday, we’ll introduce the author of our foreword, one of NIGHT GALLERY’s most passionate and outspoken supporters. Until then...

Here's the latest chapter for our next book release....

With daughter Anne Serling's foreword representing the family heritage, we next sought a cinematic voice to express NIGHT GALLERY’s impact on generations of filmmakers. That task fell to Oscar-winning writer/director Guillermo del Toro, who confessed his earliest infatuation with the series in his DVD commentary for “The Doll” (a release shepherded by authors Scott Skelton and Jim Benson). Guillermo (pictured here with publisher Taylor White) is the owner of five original GALLERY paintings. The paintings include “The Escape Route” from the pilot, which became one of the crown jewels in his wildly popular traveling “Cabinet of Curiosities” museum exhibit. Del Toro graciously allowed this masterpiece to be photographed for our book, as well as contributing an insightful and passionate introduction to THE ART OF DARKNESS.

Guillermo recently reviewed our proofs and is as eager as anyone to own a copy. (As are we all…) See you next Wednesday!

Rod Serling's Night Gallery - The Art of Darkness

Welcome to THE ART OF DARKNESS. For those of you who have been patiently following our progress, this book culminates a 25-year journey for authors Scott Skelton, Jim Benson, and publisher Taylor White of Creature Features. With the support of Universal Studios, original series crew members, and principal artist Thomas J. Wright, we have collected all of the original Night Gallery paintings into one massive volume for the first time.

Assembling this epic tome took us on a long and daunting expedition around the globe to locate and professionally photograph as many of the existing paintings as could be unearthed. At present, only two original paintings remain in NBC/Universal Studios’ first-rate archives while the remaining 100 were borrowed, rented, stolen, or otherwise relocated. Thus began our epic archeological dig to unearth the rest, a tall order, even in the age of the internet.

The nearly 300-page book is brimming with hundreds of rare, behind-the-scenes photos and artwork. It documents each of the paintings, and traces the complicated (and often twisted) tale of how these iconic masterpieces slowly disappeared from view—only to find their way back, lovingly displayed in two gallery exhibits for appreciative connoisseurs 50 years later.

Your number-one question is, undoubtedly, “When will the book be released?” At the moment, the book is one week away from the licensing department at NBC/Universal for final review. Following that, it travels to our printer in Asia for three months of proofing, printing, and binding, followed by a month’s sea voyage back to the docks of Long Beach, and finally to our warehouse in Sierra Madre. With luck and good fortune, the long wait will be over as quick as you can say “trick 'r treat.”

Until then, we hope you’ll join us every Wednesday as we continue to lift the veil on this monumental undertaking, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Rod Serling’s macabre creation—and the artistic genius of Tom Wright and Jaroslav Gebr.

Until next week . . .
