THIS WEEKEND AT IFS:
(April 18 - 19)

Saturday April 18th @ 7:30pm
Eastern Anthems (2024, dir. Matthew Woklow, Jean-Jacques Martinod)
Filmmakers Matthew Woklow & Jean-Jacques Martinod in person
{Two insect-loving artist friends embark on a relay work before the return of the American Great Eastern Brood X cicada, which emerges in the eastern United States every 17 years. This experimental film uses a combination of long-distance interviews, sound recordings of the cicada's intoxicating song, and images in a variety of media and formats, while highlighting the artists' process, which is fraught with pitfalls. These include, the use of a faulty camera and out-of-date film, and, above all, the impossibility of crossing the U.S. border during COVID. An aesthetic force of rare artistic candour, this skillfully cobbled-together audio and visual immersion bears witness to a periodic natural event while painting a sociological portrait of an America that may also be at the start of a new cycle.}

Sunday April 19th @ 2:00pm
Fit to be Untied (1975, dir. Silvano Agosti, Marco Bellocchio, Sandro Petraglia)
ON 35MM FILM! Discussion Panel to follow the film
{This documentary was distilled from a 3 1/2-hour television film Nessuno o Tutti, to make the point that many inmates now in mental hospitals could be released without harm to society, and to their advantage.}

CWA and IFS:

Wednesday April 15th @ 7:30pm
The Farewell (2019, dir. Lulu Wang)
FREE SHOW / Writer/Director Lulu Wang in person!
{“The Farewell” announces at the beginning that it’s “based on an actual lie,” but the meaningful truths it reveals couldn’t be more poignant or powerful. And while writer/director Lulu Wang’s film is obviously personal and culturally specific, it achieves a universality and a resonance through its vivid depiction of a family in the midst of crisis.}

Thursday April 16th @ 7:30pm
Nationtime (1972, dir. William Greaves)
FREE SHOW / With archivist Sandra Schulberg in person!
{New restoration from IndieCollect. They say that history does not repeat itself, but it rhymes. That may be why our turbulent and divisive times are reflected in films set half a century ago, a time of large protest gatherings and marches, many about the same social justice issues that are still contentious today: rights of people of color, rights of women, rights of LGBTA+ people, rights of people with disabilities, police brutality, end to armed conflict, accountability of elected officials.}

THIS FRIDAY AT IFS UNDERGROUND — FREE SHOW
February 13th @ 10:30pm in the VAC Auditorium
{A "blacksploitation" flick with the backbone of a horror film, this movie's writer & producer was murdered in his Hollywood home roughly ten years after its release. Filled with odd set-pieces, hilariously bad science jargon, and a lumbering menace at the center, this movie might leave you in pieces.}
