Ten years ago today, I brought my cast, crew, friends, and family together at a private theater in Beverly Hills for what they thought was simply a wrap party for my latest short film, Rayven Choi.
After they watched the film, I dropped the news: This wasn’t just a wrap party. It was also the launch party for my graphic novel, Rayven Choi, which I had secretly been working on for two years and was set to be released the following week.
And then there was the cake, which officially announced my brand-new imprint: Shero Comics.
There were A LOT of surprised faces. 😂
Ten years later, so much has happened, and somehow, it feels like so much more is about to happen.
Over the past decade, I’ve taken my books on a mini world tour across Asia. I created a doll that is now housed in museums alongside my books. Awards have been won. Schools and libraries have placed orders. And what started as a surprise announcement in a Beverly Hills theater has grown into something bigger than I could have imagined that night.
I didn’t set out to build an entire Shero Universe, but somehow, that’s exactly what happened. One story led to another. One character led to another. And ten years later, we’re still building.
In four days, the Spanish-language edition of Young Grandmaster Choi will be released. In two weeks, we’ll host our fourth SheroCon. And in three months, we’ll release Young Grandmaster Choi Chapter 3. The Young Grandmaster Choi series itself is a prequel to Rayven Choi, bringing this ten-year journey right back to where it all began.
As Dr. Seuss famously wrote, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”
And since launching Shero Comics ten years ago today… oh, the places I’ve been. ❤️
